convection microwave

2017 jayco 26xd This is our first convection microwave. Always had the gas oven in RV before. Today I decided to figure out to use it. Did a 325 pre-heat and then 2 minutes. The handle on the small cabinet above the convection micro wave was quite hot as well as the wood door. Is this a problem. I guess if is then a person couldn't use the convection part.
Also top inside door says-Reminder, Rack needs to be used for convection or grill function. That rack doesn't leave much room to put some on to
cook. need educated on this convection microwave. Manual not much help.

Did you open the outside vent ?
Forgot to open ours (on our Seneca) once and it made a big difference on heat venting.

We always use the fan (on the microwave).

My understanding is the rack is to elevate what you're baking so air flows around the food (hence 'convection'. When grilling (it's more 'broiling') and you'd want to be closer to the burner otherwise you'd be 'baking' a steak instead.

Did not run the fan. its very noisy and I thought it was for when cooking on the stove. Will try that. Have outside vent open about a 1/4 in using one of the chair leg protectors. Is so high outside I had to use a ladder to reach it. Will open it further and run fan to see how that does. thanks

The outside vent has locking tabs. Normally you lock them down when under way and release them when stopped and cooking. Once released the fan will open the vent the approximate amount. If you don’t release the tabs the oven can overheat the surrounding area. You should not need to put anything into the vent to keep it open.
