Cummins Fuel Filter

Dropped off my 2017 Seneca for it's first maintenance. Oil change, fuel filter replacement etc. On my home after picking up the Seneca from Freightliner I started smelling diesel. When I got home I saw fuel pouring out from the secondary fuel filter. Freightliner came to the house and replaced it. Said the filter cracked, most likely from over tightening when installed.

The filter is a plastic canister. The tech said he has seen this a number of times. Either cracking or separating. Why would Freightliner make, sell plastic filters?
I now will be carrying a spare filter on my travels.

I've had diesels for 35 years and the plastic screw-on bottom on the fuel/water separator lets you see the gunk and water. The sensor should alert to a water-in-fuel condition but the visual is the proof. Finger tight only.
Check out the Racor line. Best of the best and all with plastic bottoms.

I agree, the secondary being plastic seems "cheap". But it is what our Cummins require and I am unaware of any suitable replacement that might be more robust. I change my own and carefully check it after I finish and fire it up.
