What I have found with DirectTV is that they demand a multiyear contract and the equipment is theirs.

I have DirectTV and I did not have to sign a multiyear contract. I also start and stop it every 6 months with no penalty. (only use it at seasonal site) As far as I'm concerned the receiver belongs to me.

I plan on going with satellite service next season. I know for Dish network, you buy the equipment and pay as you go. No contract. No activation or termination fees. I guess Direct offers the same. I'm hoping to talk to satellite reps at the rv shows I attend this winter to get all the details.
