Just got home from a trip from PA to Texas Motor Speedway and back... 3,002.9 miles. No problems at all from adding the pulley, and NO annoying noises!!

This has been discussed before and I would love to figure out the issue and take care of. I am copying the post that I originally responded to.
Engine Sound, Throttle Body? https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...ody-72947.html
I took it to a Ford tech and they weren't able to help me.

Installed without issue
As many in the thread have related got my parts in about two weeks ago but between having back to back bookings for the MH was not able to install until yesterday. Install supereasy. Started up, warmed up, revved, no noise. Will do small test run today or tomorrow and then DW takes it and the toad up north. I anticipate zero problems. Left stock belt on but got greenback belt as replacement/spare. I appreciate everyone here for deep diving this. Countless V-10 owners will be happy as larks.

Thank you Mini4mw for this post. After 3 years of wrestling with this the problem is solved! The best 40 bucks (or so) ever spent. It would be great if Ford would somehow post this.
I can also turn down the radio now because there is no need to drown out the rattle.

Another positive note; 5,000+ miles and still sounds good.

BTW: 3000 miles and no issue and best is no screaming belts anymore!
PS. Thought you'd find this funny.
Lookin' thru the manual online, the 6.2L shows this "missing" pulley. Now look close at the 6.8L drawing. See the child like attempts to cover up the now missing pulley!
6.2L
6.8L

I installed the extra pulley. It's been 3000 miles and no issues. I just wonder why the pulley was deleted? For cost?

You can believe that there is a cost consideration of every decision.
Soooo does anyone think that Ford would ever change their 'engine noise' shop diagnosis procedure based on this discovery?
Nope.
Never.
They'll just keep replacing the belts and maybe tensioners, and the noise will go away....for a while.

It's a revenue generator for the dealerships. Although the belts and tensioners they replace are still good, they can sell those to others who need them replaced...not due to the belt rattle. And they keep having you coming back.

That is hilarious you mentioned the squirrel noise because the first time mine did this I thought for sure there was a family of squirrels had made a nest in my air box and they were screaming for their lives as I drove down the road. That is exactly what is sounds like.

I would wager that hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent tackling unnecessary engine repairs going after this noise. It has to be known by ford at this point but they won’t ever say a word because dealerships across the country rake in repair $$$ for nothing. I can’t say anything better about Jayco, they wanted $2k to replace the pump in my leveling system after I found it covered in fluid. Guess what, I cleaned it off, refilled and tightened the cap and it hasn’t leaked a drop since in 10k miles…just a loose cap. It’s really frustrating dealing with these folks.

Anyone got the correct part number for the HEX HEAD WASHER BOLT for that Extra Idler on the 99-6.8 v-10? I ordered bolt/ pulley, but received a TORX head shoulder bolt, and it is the wrong diameter; might be wrong pulley too?

Bullitt6283,
Can you CLARIFY WHAT YOUR VEHICLE/ ENGINE IS, and what PARTS ##s for parts you got THAT WERE CORRECT? (I too got wrong parts for my 99E450SD 6.8, shipped to me was a TORX shoulder bolt and pulley, shoulder fit the bearing, but thread too large for hole (guessing 5/16 thread received and needed 1/4" thread???)
