E450

When is Ford coming out with a redesigned E450? What engine and transmission? Do you think it will make any difference with gas mileage?

E450 and gas mileage?

If you're talking about a V10, then you can forget about and don't worry about gas mileage.. You know it won't be good.

If gas mileage is important (and not knowing what coach you want), maybe consider the Mercedes chassis?

There is the new 7.3L V8 coming out shortly. I don't know if it'll make it into the Class 'C' chassis though.

Sounds like a beast of an engine. But at 7.3L I cannot imagine it will have great fuel mileage.

E450

I would wait at least 1 maybe 2 yrs to see if any issues with the 7.3 . The current v10 is bullet proof, no need to change.how much puwer do you need, what is the rush, take it from this 77 yr old...

Ford recently announced that they will start production in Jan. 2020 of their 2021 model year E-450 chassis. It will have an updated dash, the new 7.3L V8 engine previously mentioned and a 10 speed automatic. The 7.3 L is a new push rod design and was released fairly recently. Looks like the Triton V10 is gone for good. Anticipate mpg will slightly improve. If Im not mistaken the 7.3L has higher HP and torque than the Triton V10. Considering Jayco gets these chassis stretched by Morryde and there are chassis in the pipeline I would speculate Jayco would probably make the switchover for their 2021 models which may start shipping around May 2020.

That's a lot of 'new' stuff. I'd echo other sentiment in that I'd be happier if it was established for 4-5 years before I hopped on board. For now, I'm happy w/ my V10 and the 6 speed (which is better then the 5 speed, which was better then the 4 speed).

Why would they spend a penny on changing the platform while it's all internal combustion?

Next rev, hybrid or full on electric.

Gas mileage is not that important. Get real how many miles do you drive a year? I want something that is bullet proof. New engine in any vehicle first few years not my idea of bulletproof. I’m not waiting just to get a couple more miles per gallon.

Scheduled for the 2021 lineup I believe. I would wait a couple of years to buy to get the bugs worked out of it if any.

May have misspoken about the 10 speed transmission- found some information indicating the 7.3L will be paired with a 6 speed for the 2021 E-450, not sure if it the current one used in the 2019s. Agree with the other comments lots of new stuff and reliability unknown.

I just looked at a few images on fordauthority.com of the new cab design. Not a dramatic change, but it looks like some much-needed improvement.

I like that driver safety/convenience items are being added as standard like auto-headlights, traction control, hill-start assist, etc.

But I agree that there's no way I would buy an "unproven" power train right out of the box. Whole lotta nope right there. BTDT. I'm content to let someone else work out the bugs and move into it 3-5 years after release.

Hmm, 7.3 is .1 less than the old 460 (7.4). That engine was around forever and it too was like the V10 “bulletproof”. One important difference, you could watch the gas gauge go down while the speedo climbed. I’m with some of the others, wait on the new engine and tranny, lots of folks were unhappy with the early V10s. Current ones are great, this one has 45K and my previous one had 80K, both almost completely trouble free.

I have a Jayco 24.5CKTS and pull it with an F-350 SD with the diesel engine and 6 speed tranny which is much more rugged than the 10 speed. Jayco, IMHO should quit the E-450 and move up to the F-550 chassis and cab which is modern, up to date and not based on a chassis Ford will likely ditch since they have the Transit platform. Check out the Thor Super C's, built on the F-550. I prefer the fifth wheel for my use because I then disconnect and have a good pickup to use when not camping or I would have bought a Thor.

7.3 L engine is supposed to have more HP than 6.7 L Diesel but the same torque as the Diesel, according to the Ford news release. Ford said they are after commercial customers that do not want a Diesel.....

We looked VERY hard at some Dynamax Isata RV products on the Ram 5500 chassis. You could/can even get it in 4-wheel drive!! And it checked ALL the other boxes too...

Man, I would LOVE to have had one of those, but in the end we just couldn't swallow the significant premium in entry cost for our current level of usage. Even the used ones that I could find were pretty far out of our price range.

I did make an agreement with myself though: Our next one will likely be a diesel. But it'll be so long before that happens (unless we have a major financial windfall), that something else will likely be available by then...

There is absolutely no way that the 7.3L gas will have the same torque as the 6.7L diesel.

.

Based on current Ford offerings combined with known build specs mathematically the 7.3L V8 should have an estimated 470 hp and 540 lb-ft of torque.

Tuning is unknown so if they stretch for higher MPG that could shift 5 or so %

I hope Ford builds this 7.3 without cylinder deactivation. The Dodge and Chevrolet gas V8's with cylinder deactivation seem to like eating their cam shafts. A nice bonus would be that the V8 should smaller then the overhead cam V10 which could mean a smaller dog house and less heat transfer.

I had a mid-70s GMC Jimmy (big one like a Yukon) full-time 4WD that got 6 MPG. Later I had a Suburban that got 12 around town and 16 on the interstate. I get 9 MPG with my Alante pulling a Chevy Colorado so I think I'm ahead of the game.
