Electric Trailer Brakes
I just purchased a 2015 Seneca 37 HJ and need to add an electric trailer brake controller. Looks like all the wires are there at the trailer socket. If it is prewired, where are the wires located under the dash for the brake controller? Thanks!

My Ford E450 has the brake controller wires behind the coin holder on the dash. Pop the coin holder down from the top side. The blue wire is there, but use your meter to find the 12volt hot wire and the 12 volt wire the is the brake switch lead.

It depends on the tow vehicle and year. Some trucks maybe prewired for a controller but may require you to solder or crimp on a connector, others have a connector by may require an adapter. Others (like Chevy) may require you to hook up certain wires under the hood for your 12v charge wire and 12v power lead for the controller...and you need to supply fuses for both. If you post your TV info, we can help you more. Etrailer.com also has good info.

It all depends every year the chassis manufacture changes this.. but the first place I would look is the under dash fuse box you just might see a spot to plug in the brake controller..

It definitely varies by maker!
My 2003 F350 had 4 wires tucked above and inboard of the gas pedal. SWMBO's 2009 Tacoma had a plug above the parking brake pedal and the mating connector with wires in the glove box.
Definitely use a meter to determine +12V, ground, brake pedal applied and output to trailer's brakes. Double-check continuity on that last one all the way to the trailer.
Also double-check that +12V breakaway battery charge is functioning.

If it's a Ford chassis, yes. It's prewired from the factory. Most likely, behind one of the coin/utility trays to the right of your right knee

If it is a Ford chassis and you use the Ford controller, you'll need to replace the brake master cylinder and have the vehicle flashed on an IDS. If you're adding an aftermarket controller, it should be Plug-N-Play. I have heard instances that even with an aftermarket controller, you MAY have to get it flashed.

His Seneca is on a Freightliner chassis but if the trailer plug near hitch is wired with all 7 wires there should be a pigtail under the dash where the controller will be connected. Look for it close to brake pedal tied up out of the way.
The pigtail could have a plastic plug on it or it could just be cut wire ends taped off. There will be four wires, two larger than the other two. Common colors used are Red, Black, Blue and Gray but your wires could be different. I have no experience with Freightliner (although I wish I did!!)
Congrats on a sweet RV - may it keep you safe wherever you go

The way I found it in my F350 was using a signal tracer (for phone and house wiring) hooked to the electric brake feed at the 7 Pin connector.
Then probed under the dash for the best signal.
[Sheepishly]The Tacoma had it the manual.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I will trace it back from the rv socket tomorrow and see if the brake wire terminates under the chassis or actually makes it to the dash. Sure would be sweet if it did!

If the manufacturer bothered with the 7 pin connector and a trailer hitch, the 4 wires you need will probably be bundled together somewhere.
Like everything else, the bundle will be in the LAST place you look.

Do any of the F450 units come with the brake controller from the factory? Most F350 Pickups and F450's have them pre-installed from the factory. I hate having the after market controller hanging off of the dash somewhere.

Well. I am happy to report that my 2015 Seneca was prewired for the electric brake controller (not plug and play). For anyone interested the bare wire bundle located adjacent to the bundle directly over the accelerator is the wires for the controller. For some reason there are two blue wires for power to the brakes. You need only splice into one as they both go and come from the same tab on the RV socket.

Are they large blue wires, and smaller red wires?

Picture of what I have. I did not think these were the wires because of the size?

That's them! For some reason about a foot away from the 7 pin RV socket the blue trailer brake wires split into two blue wires. The solid red is the hot. The red/white is the brake signal and the last one is the ground.

They might have run two instead of a larger wire to be sure you get full power to the brakes since it is a fairly long run. I would connect both coming from the controller.
