Don't know why people want to reinvent the wheel. There is a reason it is named "AUTO TRANSFER SWITCH." Is designed to transfer electricity Automatically. There is a time delay involved and nothing happens under load. The generator has priority when it is running. Most manuals say 2 hours run time under load once a month. The same goes for household generators. They also do not get disconnected.

My home ATS is huge, it never gets moved , and it is there to prevent my Generac from back feeding the power lines and killing an unsuspecting lineman.

My Progressive ATS in the Jayco is mobile and subject to the bumps and rolls of traveling down the highway, small and less robust, and is in the same location as water pipes. I believe this ATS is best trusted to unplugging the shore power PRIOR to running my onboard Onan.

It is a very personal decision whether to unplug from shore power before running the Onan.

I asked Jayco that questions in the past. They stated that the transfer switch is gen dominate. If it sees voltage on the gen side it switches regardless if you are on shore power or not. I find this is typical with most RV builders.

Recently purchased a 2018 Pinnacle 38FLWS and ran generator while plugged into shore power. The transfer switch has a mechanical rocker to physically prevent two power sources. Something in my switch incurred a fault, and I lost the transfer switch ($150) and the fireplace ($300). I replaced the switch with an old fashioned two plug manual system like I had growing up.

Yep manual systems or manually turning off shore power prior prevents poor performance. I rest my case...
