Personally I can't see why the main tank would need to be shut off. You would be feeding into the low pressure side of the system and the tank is on the high pressure side. How could low pressure mess with a much higher pressure.

Don't know if it would freak out the regulator but probably not. I have thought about doing the same thing with my low pressure fitting mainly because I am lazy and was looking for alternatives to filling up my tank. Currently my SeeLevelII gauge shows 45% full and I am going on a 4 day trip next week. If I don't fill up the tank I will end up watching my gauge the entire trip.

Talked myself into filling the tank tomorrow. Jeeze being old and lazy sucks. My propane filler is only 1 mile from my house and a great place to go to. I am pathetic.

For me it is for convenience. The third tank essentially doubles the capacity of the active main RV tank before auto-switching to the second main RV tank.

This thread is on the Class C forum which has an on-board tank and we have travel trailer people with two external tanks muckin up the water.

As long as they bring a 12-pack-to-share in with them, everyone's welcome in my opinion.

I was aware that I was posting to a motorhome forum however my post does address the very scenario the OP was querying about. Jayco essentially or at least did in 2018 sell from the factory RVs that has an additional tank installed with a separate regulator. It came with the Dry Camping option which is intended to extend a camper's stay. It would seem to validate the diagram that kyuan provided and would speak to the safety concerns the OP had.

My question would be for that diagram is why do it? Feeding a pressurized system from 2 different points far away from each other can make competing pressures. Cause extra stress on propane lines… that’s why people are saying it is unsafe. But again would it work? Yes…

Second why not do it the right way? 30 dollar part and few minutes to install. The diagram would require additional regulator so it would be even more expensive to do the wrong way PLUS the safety issue. Finally keep in mind, if you end up having issue and say someone gets hurt due to it. They find you have a rigged system not properly installed… you can be in legal issue civil and criminal if someone gets killed in many states. Just my opinion, it is no brainer. Do right way for safety… cheaper… and less legal liability.

I love my extended stay fitting

Took 5min to install

Why people have to do things the unsafe way, then tell people to do it they way, is mind boggling

Here's my take - think about the NEXT owner of your RV. If they see an extended stay, they'll know exactly what is going on (or will be able to look it up.)

If you've crafted something cool, nifty, unique - congratulations.
But odds are very high the next person won't have a clue on what you did.

At worst, something bad will happen.
At best, they'll rip out your "creative" solution.

Ever buy a house, rip open a wall and look at the plumbing and say "What were they thinking?"
