Frozen Water Line - Life Hack

Hello All,

So we were doing a little dry camping the other day and we had some chilly weather roll in that I wasn't exactly ready for. The temps dropped to the teens and by morning time it was evident that my water lines had frozen. After crawling around the underside and finding the possible culprit, my guess was the line coming from the tank to the water pump had froze. To say that I wasn't prepared for this cold weather was an understatement.

Well in a half kidding way DW threw out the idea of taking some of those hand-warmers that you buy in those little packages and wrapping them around the pipe (for some crazy reason we had a box of them?). I figured I didn't have anything to lose so I took the hand-warmers and taped them to the water line. In addition I used the small pieces of "noodles" I had (used to protect my head from the sharp corners of the slides) and wrapped them around also. Well to my amazement....IT WORKED! Within a couple of hours the line thawed and we had water again.

There is a saying something about an ounce of prevention that keeps going through my head and I certainly will make sure I get that line wrapped but just in case you get caught "exposed" like I did, give those hand warmers a try, they just might get you out of a jam.

Happy Camping...

Rob

It's good you had those with you. I use them a lot in the winter when I get the snow blower out. One in each mitt, and it's like having heated grips. They do give off an impressive amount of warmth, and IIRC, for about 40 minutes or so. Your DW gets an 'attaboy'!

I did figure that. We were 90 something today, and super humid. Tomorrow's a different story. The high is suppose to be 67*. Getting out the thermies soon!

Glad you had no damage. Looked bad on TV. Feel bad for the ones that got flooded.

Yeah it was really bad in a lot of places. Lucky for us that we barely got any rain at all.
