Fuel pump problem

I had a fuel pump go out on my 26SS. It was at home when it happened. It just didn't start after sitting. So me being rather mechanical inclined I changed it my self. Which involved removing the tank I will not do that again. I was thinking ,will a engine compartment mounted electric pump work? Will it pull gas up through the non working pump? Just a thought. Stan

Is the fuel level sensor part of the pump assembly? Did it still work when pump failed? Is there a inertia switch on the vehicle. This turns power off to pump when a abnormal sudden stop happens(accident).

I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm saying be careful if you do. First, I have no idea if the "new" pump would pull through the defective one, you'd have to check that out. Like the other poster indicated, the inertia switch is VERY important, it keeps the fuel pump from pumping gasoline onto the highway if an accident ruptures the fuel system. After that you'd have to make sure that the new fuel pump it providing the correct pressure to whatever type of fuel system you have. This would likely entail some kind of return line to the fuel tank. This isn't even taking into account the liability you would incur. Since you have already replaced the fuel pump, hopefully not with the low cost option, I'm thinking that you have quite a few years until a new one is needed. Personally I think it would be easier to write the check than to deal with everything above. But hey, that's me, it may not be you.
