Gen oil change ?

Anyone know the torque spec for the oil drain plug on the QD8000 generator ?
That is such a small plug I don’t want to strip it but don’t want it too loose and leaking either.

If you can't find the spec, a general rule of thumb is snug and then 1/4 turn. It probably ends up being about 20-30 ft-lbs.

How often do you change your Gen oil. I seldom use my gen. I’m into my 3rd year and only have 40 hours on the QD8000 GEN SET

You might consider replacing the stock pipe plug with a Fumoto valve. Makes it so much easier and mess-free when draining the oil. Also never have to worry about stripping the treads taking it out and replacing it at every oil change. Only issue is you need to know exactly is the size your original plug, apparently our gennys could be made with different plugs. My stock plug was 1/4" pipe thread. To add the Fumoto required an adapter that screws into the crankcase then the valve itself screws into that adapter.

Onan recommends every 150 hours or at least once a year for the QD8000;

According to my Cummins Onan manual you should change the oil at 50 hours initially, then every 150 hours after that. HOWEVER, they preface the 150 hour mark by also saying at least once a year.

I think you need to change it!

I wish I had thought of this before changing the oil. That would make it a lot easier.

I should try to figure out which one I need for the engine oil too....

Check out my post here about the engine oil plug. Very handy!

x2 on the Fumoto. Have them on all my Freightliners, tractors and pretty much everything else. Super great invention.
