It would help to know what generator but all of that information can be found in the manual. If you did not get a manual try Google with the make and model of the generator. There will even be some YouTube videos with someone going through the entire change process for you.
As mentioned, just find the owner's manual online and it will say. Typically Onan wants you to use their brand oil but that is not really necessary. Just pick a good brand and go for it.
I have had 2 Onan generators - a 2800 watt propane and a 4000 watt gas. Both had recommendations of straight 30 weight rather than multi. That was for my temp range.

My 5500 called for 15w40 and the 4K I have now calls for 15W40 for severe conditions and 30 for most other.
He does need to find the manual because weight is going to make a difference with operating conditions and the size of the genny.
As already stated, Google your model Generator, and get a copy of it's repair/owners manual. Then keep it with all the other owners manuals. I got one for the A/C, refrigerator, etc.
