Generator Sound

Our Onan 4000 generator has a random clicking/metallic sound at times. It seems to occur mostly during warmer temperatures. If it's happening, it doesn't change if the load/rpms on the genset change. Since it didn't change with engine load change I was thinking it was probably an odd rattle somewhere but I see a lot of references to the fuel pump on the web making a clicking sound.

Has anyone had this issue with their genset? Could it be the fuel pump making the sound even if it doesn't change based on load?

We have a trip planned in early August and leaving from Dallas I know we'll have some pretty high temps so I'd like so sort out any temperature related issues before we hit the road.

Thank you!

Generator Sound

Do you hear it when priming the generator? I've had something similar in the past and it ended up being the fuel pump. Seemed to have something to do with the pump gumming up from minimal usage. Ran seafoam through it, replaced my carb (this on an older 5'er) and the clicking went away.

As mentioned by foglght and others (on other forums) it sounds like the fuel pump noise, and given its age probably normal.
Otherwise, they are available on Amazon for about $40 and take 30 minutes to change.

I run the generator every 2-3 weeks and we use the RV enough that the fuel stays fresh. I've never had an issue with it starting or running correctly so I don't think it's a fuel quality issue. The fuel pump is my prime suspect at this point. I did notice the sound when priming it once this last weekend but historically I have not.

Is the sound an indication of impending failure or is that just a "normal characteristic" of these pumps? The genset has around 110 hours on it.

Very much normal and no worries.
