I trimmed it to fit in and around the existing rail and then used RV caulk to seal the top and sides in place. Mine came out about an inch on the opposite side of the slop and was open so I caulked a "wall" there to make sure any water was directed down the spout. Certainly wouldn't hurt to put the sealant behind to provide adhesion.
When you look at the end of the rail, when whatever sealant is there is removed to fit the spout, mine had an opening in the rail itself. That's why I trimmed it to slide in there to help hold it in place. May be a better way to do it, but it worked for me. I bought them when I first purchased the RV but was unsure how to mount, so I kept putting it off. When the streaks started to discolor the decals, I said enough was enough and finally put them up. That's why I said I wished I had them up sooner. It's my first RV, so I can claim ignorance
