How fast is too fast?

With our new used 2010 GH FS31, I tried to go about 65MPH for our trip to Yellowstone. (Of course, going up mountains was a bit slower grin). I was wondering if that sounds about right? I had a lot of C Classes passing me (lots of leprechauns near Yellowstone for some reason, not too many Jayco's. They must have some really good dealers out there) so I was thinking maybe I was traveling too slowly. I got between 7-8 MPG for the entire trip, which I figured was about average reading through other forums.

What do you think? What is too fast?

My TV likes 62-63mph towing and since we are never in any rush I abide by what my TV's likes.

I never worry about how fast other people go.

Safe travels and just enjoy.

About 62 is the sweet spot for our rig (about 2,200 RPM). This gives a bit over 10 MPG on average.

My truck likes 110kmh (68 mph). Set the cruise and go. In tow/haul and shifts down very little.

I've had my 08 GH 31ss up to about 65 and it felt ok, but 55 to 63 is a good comfortable range for my unit. Every unit has a happy spot, just like any other vehicle with 4 wheels and a motor.

You're gonna get fewer mpg's the faster you go, so whatever feels good for you is good.

2016 31 FK will cruise easily at 70+, but I too don't care what anyone else drives. 65-68mph is about my max.

Just remember most trailer tires are only rated for 65 max o be careful going over that also some states require speed limit for trucks and anything towing another vehicle have speed limits of 60 just saying!

My Goodyear 17.5" G114 tires are rated for 70 mph so no worries there.

65 mph. I don't care about the sweet spot; I'm not putting 20k a year on it to let me be concerned with such matters. I'm also not retired, so my RV time is limited. My rig handles like a dream at 65, that's the speed limit around here, so that's what I drive at condiions permitting. Rain, wind, etc. obviously I modify. And when I find a road that's, 70, its still 65 for me.

I stay below 65 as my trailer tires are only rated for 65 mph max. When I am camping with the family I am not in a hurry. Slow and steady wins the race for me when camping.

62 for me, I might kick it up to 68 on open and clear Interstate such as I 10 from San Antonio to El Paso with its 85 mph limit

That said its not the speed you can drive, its the speed you should drive safely. All vehicles have a safety envelope, just make sure you stay inside that and you are ahead of the game. The critical factor of course is tires, buy quality and go for the highest weight and speed rating you can.

I have a Greyhawk 31ss. 60 mph is where I lock it. Let them pass me.

It's also reinforced by this video. Jump to 2:54.

If you watched this, then at the end you saw another one "an RV crash to remember" below.

This is a dash cam recording the wind blowing over a TT. Suggest all watch it and think if it would be a good idea to RAISE the CoG on and RV after seeing this! Yet here and any forum there is always discussion about doing a "spring-over" or "axle flip". which raises the CoG.

Remember, it is not about how fast you can drive it is how fast you can stop. You may be able to drive 70 mph but your stopping distance is greatly increased when towing. DRIVE SMART AND SAFE!

Due to limits of my toad, I can't run over 65. I set the cruise at 63. I can travel anywhere and don't ever have to pass anybody except slow trucks pulling a hill. They all fly around me. Doesn't bother me a bit.

Smile

I find that 5 under is my goal.

with or without toad I am personally happy.

I have cruised faster for reason, everything handled well, but I know that the MPH is suffering.

when I look at Google map and they say it will take 6 hours,,,, I know that I will take 7. I stop to nature calls, hungry calls, etc. five or ten mph means nothing to me. so what if I open my sundowner at 4 or 4:30 it still tastes good

Slow and steady

I have a 17 year old gentleman's 1/2 ton GMC so our sweet spot is 55-60. Yes everyone passes us but we are retired and I don't care. We get more than 10 mpg so it's a win win.
