How to keep mice out of engine compartment

I was getting ready to head out for a long weekend in my RV when the check engine light came on and I was losing power. I opened the hood only to find that mice have completely fill my engine with boxwood branches from my yard. It had to have been recently done, because some of the leaves were still green. Who knows what other damage has been done.

Question I have is, what have others done to successfully keep mice out of the engine? I live out in the country so getting exterminator will not work.

I bought 2 of the electronic devices you hook up to 12 volts. It sets off a strobe light and sonic noise when it detects motion. Haven’t had any squirrels or mice so far.

While I know a lot of people don't like poisons, these two items work for me. It takes a little while at first. ~CA

and these bait stations will keep cats and dogs safe.

The engine compartment itself can be handled by a periodic general inspection.

The intake air filter box is more troublesome if rodent intrusion. I have in the past when living in an environment similar to you; inserted heavy duty metal screening at the input to the air filter box. This may or may not be possible on your particular vehicle.
This stuff:

This can be purchased at big-box hardware stores.

Good idea to also go over every square inch underneath your unit to seek out more intrusion points.

get some cats. On the bright side. My neighbor hated cats, stinky things, until the mice chewed up the $5,000 motherboard in his combine and the wiring. He doesn't hate cats as much.

If there's access to an electrical outlet close to your truck, plug in a length of LED rope lights and lay a loop on the ground under the engine end of the truck overnight.

During the day, leave the hood partially open to allow light into the engine compartment. This was recommended when I visited Organ Pipe Cactus National park in Arizona to prevent the pack rats from nesting around the engine.

I made 5 bait stations line the JT Eaton for about $4 each and use them to keep pets safe and post around the camper and garage doors. Easy to make and are dog and raccoon proof.
