Insulate Step box

I recently replaced the carpet in our 2010 36FK with final plank flooring. When I removed the carpet from the sides of the step box there were large gaps to the outside. I filled the gaps with spray foam before finishing the instlll but I was wondering if anyone else has tried to insulate the metal step box from the outside to prevent cold or heat transferring into or out of their rig through the steps.
