Insulating the Doghouse

In a previous post, I outlined the insulation of our RV's cab.
https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...tml#post957747

This post follows on that project and details the insulation of our doghouse in that same RV using leftover material.

There are lots of pictures so I added this project to my blog whose post is here:
https://donstronicthings.blogspot.co...-doghouse.html

This is an easy-to-do upgrade.

I always struggled to get the doghouse out from between the seats. Accidentally this time I found out that the storage compartment on the front of the doghouse is removable making removing the doghouse from the RV pretty easy.

Would the 36 sq ft 80 mil kilmat work for both the cab and doghouse? By that I mean the additional thickness fit and is 36 sq ft enough to also do the doghouse too.

Calculating the sound & heat abatement area of a E450 cab and doghouse.

Let's see if we can do the math! Check my math ...

I have 20 sheets left after doing the cab and doghouse.

The 50sq ft box holds 45 sheets.

therefore:

45-20 = 25 sheets used on doghouse and cab
25/45 * 50 sqft = 27.7 sq. ft laid down

Material choices:
#1: 80 mill 36 sq ft, $57.99 https://amzn.to/2WaC1Fc

#2: 50 mill 50 sq ft, $59.99 https://amzn.to/2W2cVbm

#3: 50 mill 25 sq ft, $36 https://amzn.to/2UGEmav

Looks like:
#1 is plenty but its thicker
#2 is overkill and thin
#3 is short of the needed total but much less $$$ ... squeeze?

If your ok with #1 then #2 is only $2 more for 38% more yet thinner material ???

In any case, I don't think the 80mil material will be a problem since I did not run into any thickness issues. Leave a little margin (no mat) at the edges so it remains the normal thickness of the stock configuration.

Also, I don't know if you are laying down two layers (additional sound layer) in the cab as I did? If, not the 80mil is for sure not a concern.

Hope this helps, if not let me know....

Thank you sir. I am strongly considering the 80 mil kilmat and the noico red (and new door speakers). I would like to listen to music without having to crank up the volume (making the house speakers way too loud) to hear over the engine. An occasional conversation would also be nice. The dog wouldn't mind laying between us without roasting as well.

Are you planning to insulate your doors?
I actually forgot about them. Now I wonder if I have enough material left for that.

If you do I would be interested in how that goes?

I did the same but chose to do the doors instead of the dog house. Figured the doghouse had some insulation but the doors had none. Plan to do the doghouse like yours this winter. To warm in Houston during the summer. Nice write up and pictures. Safe travels

Enjoy the journey

Getting the door panels off was easier than taking off the doghouse. Not hard at all. Just need a thin pry tool to pop panel loose along sides and bottom. Safe travels

Enjoy the journey

Update on doghouse sound deadening performance:

I took the RV to the dealer yesterday to have a new Lift controller put in.....that's another caper.
To get back from there I have to climb a short 10% grade, my test hill !

I noticed that the cab was quieter and made a measurement. The running sound was quieter. When climbing my test hill and under heavy load, it seemed quieter also.

See what the DW thinks next time we are out.

I made a measurement during normal (not a hill) driving and it did read lower although I am not sure the conditions were exactly the same.

I am calling it an improvement .......

Bad news.... now I can clearly hear the creaks and rattles of the coach!

The doghouse was worth it

On a short trip this week the DF readily noticed another decrease in sound levels.
Aside from all my measurements, this is the one that matters !!!!

Now with the sound levels dramatically lower,
The handling much improved,
The RV is actually comfortable to drive.

The only additional plans are:
 • Rear bump stops
 • Replace the front driveline carrier bearing
