license plate remount

Hi all. It's been on my mind for the last few motor homes I had that I should move my plate to the left side because I have a basket in my hitch and " my stuff " blocks the view. Has anyone moved it and if so, where and how did you go about it? Thanks, Chuck Click image for larger version

I don't know, but my new Eagle 338 rlts came with the license plate bracket mounted under the right tail light instead of the left. I have never owned any vehicle where it was mounted on the right and it drives me crazy. Are they shipping these to England or something? Is there a reason they mounted it on the right?

I had seen a car that had a bunch of bikes on the back of it and instead of moving the plate they photocopied it and attached it to the bikes.

Maybe you could laminate a duplicate and attach it to the cargo.

Just a thought

I would get a license plate braclet with a light and mount it on the basket and wire the light so it plugs into you rear trailer wiring.

Mine is on the right. I think it was to not conflict with the left mounted ladder. I don't think it makes any legal difference where it is if it can be seen and is lighted at night.

Thanks for the input. The key also is a light on the new bracket. Hate to get stopped by the police . Chuck

I just have to ask.. Why would you worry about that? What difference does it make?

+1 I was thinking the same thing. Mine is on the right, but until he mentioned it, I would never have noticed. I have the ladder, so maybe that's why? The plate on my my boat trailer was on the left now that I think about it...

I can't really say anything, I get bothered by weird stuff too, DW says I have some kind of "problem"...

To the OP's point, I had to take defensive driving a while back. The instructor's husband is disabled, so they have one of those wheel chair racks that fits into a hitch receiver so they can use it on whichever vehicle they need it on. She was stopped one day here in TX, and the officer said the wheel chair was obstructing the plate, and the plate should be attached to the rack. She explained that the rack moves between vehicles, was she supposed to change the plate every time she moved the rack between vehicles? He pretty much said "Yup, you need to figure it out, you can't obstruct the plate." She had yet to figure out how she was going to accomplish this task...

Under different a scenario, when carrying a bunch of football tailgating gear and table situated in my receiver hitch, I inquired with my state highway patol. They told me that the liscense plate was required to be visble from 100 ft. Now, they said they wouldn't typically stop a vehicle just for that violation. But in my case, I don't want to give them any reason to pull me over. They generally pull me over just for kicks & giggles!!

BTW, Chuck nice looking rig you got there!!

Update on plate remount

I cut a 1/4 inch piece of plywood to fit between the rungs and over the poles. I stained it then cut a 2/4 with v notches to fit on the back of the poles. I then drilled two holes under the plate and sandwich the wood to the ladder. No metal touching the ladder that way. Then put a light over the plate and wired it to the trailer plug like Grumpy said. I think that should keep the police happy. Me also.

For those people that need/want to move a plate from one vehicle to another - how about those magnetic plate holders that car dealerships use. They move the dealer plates around all day - the magnet seems to be strong enough to hold during "test drives". just a thought.
