locking fuel cap

We have a 2011 Greyhawk FK29. Has anyone put a locking fuel cap on their coach. We checked the local jayco dealer/distributer and they don't carry these and suggested going to an auto parts store. We then went to a local O'Reily Autoparts store and they said they don't carry specs for motorhomes but if we drove it by they could try to match one up. Hoping to get ideas from others who may have thought about this.

Gas Cap

Won't it be a ford truck gas cap?

Yes it will be a Ford cap. The Ford chassis, dashboard, brakes, wheels, front clip, steering, drive train and gas tank, filler neck and gas cap come from the Ford factory. All the rest is retrofitted when the RV shell is bolted to the manufactured floor. No special to one gas cap is used. Jayco may build the filler door but the cap and filler neck are all FoMoCo parts.

Are you worried someone is going to siphon gas from your Motorhome?
If so, I would not put a locking gas cap on the rig.
They will either drill a hole in the cap and the you will get metal pieces in the tank or they will drill a hole in the tank.
Either way, it will end up costing you a lot more than a tank of gas.
They are thieves, so they will get any way possible. Sorry for the bad news, but I wanted to give you things to think about.

I put one on my Ford F-350 a few years ago when diesel prices were so high and I have found it to be a pain in the ---. A toad I just got (Mazda pick-up) also came with one and I'm looking for a regular one to replace it with.

All in all, more expense and trouble than the cost of the fuel that could be stolen...

I have a "Chevrolet" pickup. Yes, It is not a Ford. BUT, my 2010 vehicle is equipped with some type of ball in the filler neck, which prevents any insertion of a syphon device. The dealer stated that no locking gas cap is available or needed for the truck, as a result of the safety ball device. Call Ford parts and make an inquiry. If they do not have a locking gas cap in their parts list, in all probabilty, it is not available anywhere.

The housing around the gas cap/filler hose on my 2011 Melbourne was a perfect match for a chrome locking door/cover that fit right over the frame of the filler area. I had to drill 6 new holes in the chrome cover frame but the other holes lined right up. I purchased this locking cover/door from rvtruckparts.com. Total cost plus s/h was $50. The product no. was 100245 and the name was Gas Tank Door 10-0245 Chrome.

We installed a locking gas cap last year and it's no hassle whatsoever. It is a foregone conclusion that if offers another layer of protection from someone wanting to siphon gas. The notion to not put a locking cap on because a thief will just drill it out, or drill a hole in the tank seems a tad illogical. If that logic were true, then we'd all leave our doors open instead of locking them so the thieves won't break down the door and damage it. Just saying.

I never worry about people taking gas out. I got a lock gas cap so kids don't put stuff into the tank. The lock gas cap also stops honest crooks. It is hard to prove when gas is siphoned and stolen. If they destroy the tank all will be cover by insurance.

If you go to Mexico it also stops them from jamming the nozzle in and starting to pump before you are there... (they can start the pump with $5.00 already showing) also stops them from putting gas in the diesel tank....

I can't argue with how much trouble you think a locking gas cap is, but you cannot say that a 40 gallon tank full of $3.75/ga diesel is worth the same amount of money as a $10 locking gas cap.

I put one of each tank of my Chevy pickup a couple of years back (bought them keyed alike) because gas was $4 and my truck sat outside. I don't find it to be a hassle, and the $12 I paid is well worth the piece of mind. If someone is out and up to no good, they will most likely pass up my truck and find an easier target.

Well, with the way fuel prices have spiked the past couple of years and the way the economy has dumped, there has been a large increase in the theft of gas and fuel. I'm a retired officer and we have seen many of the large companies with truck fleets having problems with people drilling holes in the fuel tanks and draining them. They park their trucks in locked lots and someone will come in overnight and drain all the tanks through the bottom. I hate to say it, but most locking gas caps are too cheap to work. The plastic ones can easily be removed without a key. You simply squeeze the cap hard and twist, come right off. You need a metal locking cap to have any chance.
