Melbourne storage

Curious what folks have done to enhance exterior storage capacity in their units. We bought our Melbourne fully aware that exterior storage would be limited, but I'm surprised at a couple of things - in looking beneath the motorhome, there are least two locations where an additional rotocast storage bay could have been added. It's curious that Jayco didn't add a couple more storage bays there, since storage is limited already. I've actually thought about ways to use that empty space. I'm also surprised that on a 30-ft motorhome, the manufacturer would still only provide a sewer hose compartement that's 18 inches long. That pretty much rules out any hose over 8ft, and certainly any of the higher quality sewer hoses that are available today.

Storage overall seems to be a bit of a problem. Everyone seems to do modifications to make storage better.

On our 23K, the front compartment is just one big, long open space. Same with some of the interior storage. While cheap to build, not so efficient in use.

To store the fishing rods, I've installed some hooks for them to hang on. I intend on putting in some "shelves" to put the chairs on and to build compartments for all the other junk in the front compartment.

Inside, all the cupboards need to have shelves or separators built in. So, little by little, I'll be sorting things out to 'personalise' the trailer to keep things organized. Of course, the more storage you create, the more crap you haul around with you.... When we cleaned out the old TT I found more useless stuff we thought we needed stored in all the little compartments I'd created!! Something to think about!

Storage is definitely limited in our 29D, but weight limitations are much more of a factor. On a trip to Alaska last summer, we barely made it under the gross weight limitations.

G&A, just read your post here and I agree completely about the storage issue. I'm a new travel trailer owner and unsure about how and where I can screw things into the walls, etc. Did you put shelving in your TT? If so, how did you do it? Our clothing wardrobes are the big issue for me along with the 3 deep shelves in a cabinet I use as food storage. Seems flimsy so I don't want to mess things up while trying to make them better. Luvsgoldens....the trick is keep things light. For the most part, you can't really use the walls to support any weight unless you're lucky enough to find an internal brace (which is tough to do). I used 1/8th inch wood for the shelves, which sat on little 1/2in x 1/2in or 1x1 pieces I either glued or screwed (or both) into the existing cabinetry, depending on where they were going. Most of the supports were hidden within the cabinets themselves so they weren't too unsightly.

All this was done on my old TT, so I have no pictures to share. As I modify the new TT I'll post what I can.

Plan things out as well as you can, dry-fit everything and be ready to change your plans when things don't attach right. Make sure you screw into solid wood, use small screws, & when you're happy, take it apart and glue the heck out of it!

Tom Copeland: I am interested in purchasing a 29D. Just returmed from Jayco factory and had occasion to visit the 2011 model year 29D. The main concerns I have are storage space outside and the lack of sufficient foot room while standing in front of the mirror/sink area. It helps to be "pigeon toe'd" to stand there. I will appreciate any comments on the 29D from viewers. As a matter of information, the 2012 units were being built during my visit one week ago. They are projected to have a 2-3% price increase in 2012.

Just read an article on the "2012" Melbourne (which are available I guess). Has an additional storage place on the coach door side.

Just saw an article/sales brochure on the 2012. Says it has an added storage compartment on coach door side. I would wait to order if I could. Calling my dealer tomorrow to find out if I can get a 2012 instead of 2011.

Not that I know of. Just saw the brochure on-line. Called our dealer. He knows nothing (?).

Tom: I just returned from the Jayco plant last week. The 2012 brochures were still being printed. I did confirm the 2012's are in production and rolling off the assembly line. I am still interested in the 29D model m/home. Any information will be welcomed by me. The problem I recognized with the 2011 29D, was the lack of sufficient foot spac e between the toilet and the sink cabinet. Had to stand pigeon toed to face the mirrow. I am "hoping" the 2012 model has been improved in this area.

Hi, I have a 2010 29D and have never had a problem in the toilet. I am 6'2" with size 12 shoes and everything has fit without any problem while standing, sitting or bending. Dave A

we had custom drawers made to put on the pantry shelves. Work GREAT! I now can see everything in the cupboards very easily.
