Oil change on Ford E-450 chasse

Some of us will winterize our campers and park them for few months. My question is, do I change oil now and leave it with clean oil till spring or park it and change oil before fist trip next year?

I'm sure that you will get differing opinions on this subject, but I have always changed the oil in my seasonal vehicles before I use them, not after. So for example, I change the oil in my Corvette in the spring before the good weather starts. I do the same for my ATV that I plow snow with, change it in the fall before plowing season starts.

It has been reported here that it is far better on the engine to store it for the winter with clean oil in it.

How long and how many miles since the last oil and filter change? My practice has been if I am less than 50 percent remaining I will change the oil and filter as part of winterizing unless I know I will be using the coach during the winter and winterizing again.

Also, as a practice the winter months of non-travel for us is normally when I will take our coach in for for an overall service, roof inspection, re-caulking, state safety inspection, generator and chassis service. I let the dealer have at it while it is not being used and while their service department is looking for work during the off-season.

With that said, new coach and different dealer may necessitate a new way of doing things.

Never had this problem but in fact the most important thing is to run the engine hot to make sure all water boiled out of the engine and transmission before final shutdown for the winter. Oil is good if there is no water in it. The odds of oil that is not way beyond it's design lifetime being harmful is extremely low.

My last run was 15 miles to the gas station for a complete fill-up. Everything was thoroughly warmed up. Then Sta-Bil into the gas tank. Then drove Home. Then ran the genny for an hour under load to get the Sta-Bil into the genny fuel system.

Ford chassis owner's manual states that if the vehicle is to be stored for long periods, do so with fresh oil. It also says to change the oil AGAIN when the vehicle returns to service.

Personally, I do an oil change before the last trip before storage. That trip is usually less than 300 miles. About 50 miles before home, I stop and top off the fuel tank and add stabilizer. When I get it home, I run the generator to get the stabilized fuel through there, while I get the rig cleaned out and winterized.

+1 change oil before storing
Old oil can get pretty corrosive with all the residue from use and then just sitting.
Plus it's one less thing you have to do de-winterizing

Any recommendations on oil filter brands or do most just grab the Ford OEM?

Jeff

I think most of us use Mobile-1 synthetic oil and Ford (Motorcraft) filters. That's what I use anyway. Sometimes I'll use WIX filters (I use them on all my passenger vehicles), but it seems for this motor, the Motorcraft is more readily available?

Yep that's my plan, Mobil-1 Synthetic for the oil and then I'll just grab a motocraft filter from AutoZone or wherever... Changing it next week for the winter. It's been 15+ years since I've changed my own oil... Stupid question though, do I just tell AutoZone I have an E-450 or do I need to know something special about the engine to get the right oil filter?

Thanks,
Jeff

For a Motorcraft you want a FL-820S. Wix makes Napa oil filters which are good also. The Mobil 1 filters are excellent and made by Champion who also make oil filters for aircraft.

Any reason why I can't seem to find the E-450 in any of the "filter by your make/model" options either on Mobil1, Amazon, etc...??? Trying to make sure I get the right Mobil1 filter...

Thanks,
Jeff

I use Mobil 1 Oil & Filter. Also installed a Fumoto Oil Drain Valve to make changes quick and clean. Don't forget to grease the steering linkage when your under there.

I don't have an E450, but I use Mobil 1 Synthetic grease. Just one opinion.

Which Fumoto valve is compatible with the E-450?

I like Amsoil and run it in all of my engines. I have for years. Wear tests prove it outperforms most all others but you can run Mobil 1 in yours for the life of it and will probably see no difference. Some will tell you oil is oil. Synthetic is better from several points but really whatever brand you put in the vehicle will make little difference. The viscosity should be whatever the manufacturer recommends. Wix is IMHO the best made filter.

If I need to find a part number for my E450 I go to RockAuto.com and check their listing for different vendor part numbers. Filters, wipers, etc. Then I usually go to Amazon to purchase although I have bought things from Rock Auto in the past.

This is the one I installed: F106N: LONG NIPPLE VALVE WITH 14MM-1.5 THREADS WITH LEVER CLIP

Also ordered a couple of these: F-CAP: COVER CAP FOR LONG NIPPLE VALVES WITH 3/8" NIPPLES
