Onan air intake differential

I have long wondered if my generator was getting the right cooler air when running. Recently I noticed a change to the generator door at the RV show.

Also while searching the internet for Onan docs, I stumbled upon an installation manual from Onan that states that intake air should never be more than 15degrees warmer than ambient air temps. Not sure how Jayco ever tested that and got the numbers in spec. I can't attach the manual as it is over 5mb.

The entire bottom of the geny comp is usually open so there should be no problem. Same applies to the MH lines.

As previously stated the bottom of the entire compartment is usually open where the genset is installed.

That new door "design" is sort of ugly.

There has to be a reason why Jayco added a vent to the door. I would assume that compartment was holding to much heat even though its open on the bottom, Jayco won't spend an extra cent unless its needed.

After I enlarged the pic it looks like the geny has side vents. Maybe a new geny design as well. None of the ONAN's I ever owned had side vents.

Definitely a newer style, or at least totally different from what JAYCO installed before.

This is what came in my 2015 Greyhawk 31FS.

My previous unit was a 2008 Winnebago View 24p and it had a 3kw LP that never gave me issues except for trying to find fuel when away from home. I cannot recall if it's case was similar

Angry

On our 2017 Grayhawk , while on vacation out west , my on an generator would get so hot the air coming off it would burn you. Several times I would have to prop open compartment door. When I first noticed it the gen would completely shut down. After propping door open no more shut downs. Purchased unit new in June and this happened on our first trip out in August and September . Dealer only said well that doesn’t sound right. Never would look at issue.

Get ready to do the same if you come this way again this year. Our forecast is calling for temps approaching 90 degrees by the middle of next week. The first days of February!

One noteworthy comment is it is never recommended to run an Onan generator with the service panel removed, for proper cooling.

If this happened to me and I got that type of answer from the dealer I would be sending off an email to Jayco asking what needs to be done to make this right. One thing I have noticed in the two years of Jayco ownership is that they don't follow installation details at all. Parts were supplied by manufactures for install but they didn't use them so I had to repair several things so they would work right.

Thanks 2008 Seneca, as I stated compartment door not generator panel. Ran ok after I propped the coach’s door open with a small table. As if it wasn’t getting enough air with the house door closed.

Sundancer 330, that’s not half of it. After getting back called about several things that needed fixed under warranty. Couldn’t get it in until Dec 11. Have talked to them several times and always waiting on Jayco for approval one something. Even this afternoon I called and told same thing, got upset still no time to get coach back. If I could get a number for Jayco I would call them, but what I have been reading they don’t give a crap either. Any help from anybody would be appreciated. Dealer in Lexington,ky sure doesn’t care.
