Our 2016 Onan 4K exhibited the same symptoms.

It's one of:

air
fuel
spark

in order of increasing expense:
- change the plug
- change the fuel filter
- change the fuel pump
- clean the carb
- replace the carb
- take it to Onan

I started with the last and came out $750 lighter in the wallet.
Only to have my whole generator self-destruct a year later.

You forgot to address "air" in your list.

Change the air filter. Mine was surging pretty bad. New air filter fixed it right up.

Had the same problem with my onan 4k running rough and would die. Check your air/alt mixture settings, mine was set to rich. Caution, don't run them to lean.

This link was a Godsend! Cummins said no problem, dealer said no problem...but I KNEW something was not right!. I took off a half pint and thought I failed because the generator still wouldn't go longer than 5 minutes. Today I took off another 2 "baster" fulls and its been running for almost an hour now under AC load!. Like Vegas Dave says...try it...it costs nothing to try it!

Exclamation My fix for 4000 that would run 30 mins only

I had KY 4000 genset in 98 Winnie and it would run for 30 mins and die - no restart - let cool 1-2 hours - It would run again.

I had changed pump - fuel filter - choke settings - plug - coil. same problem. I was on another forum and some said to change the magneto - had to pull genset and tear apart and get big fan off and replace magneto.

low dollar part but all day job. runs all day long now

The Onan 4000 in my old 2004 Greyhawk would run for 5-10 minutes then quit. It was the fuel pump that caused the problem.

Onan had a batch of bad fuel pumps awhile back. The fuel pump[ diaphragm had a pin hole that in some cases allowed the gen to start and then shut down and in other cases, like mine, would not allow the gen to start at all. The generator on my prior class c developed this issue with 15 hours of gen time.

I didn't take time to read all post. Buy my 06 Sencea GS35 with a 5500 Onan had a similar problem. It would start right up put soon die. After some research I found if the generator is not producing full power it will shut the motor off. Again a little research found the place to start were the brushed. Pulled generator out of home enough to get to brushes and sure enough was problem. Cleaned slip rings and installed new brushed. No problem since.
