Onan Generator - Water Muffler?

I am always looking for simple solutions to common problems. My Onan generator is very loud so I Googled possible solutions for generator noise and found after-market mufflers, sound deadening/deflecting tips and discussion on a water muffler.

For anyone who has a quiet Yamaha or Honda outboard motor and has ran it for (hopefully) a very short time out of water, you would appreciated the sound-deadening of an under water exhaust!

The source I viewed suggested running a hose from the Onan exhaust into a bucket of water, positioned below the actual generator (for obvious reasons).

Have any of you tried this or have any thoughts?

My dad tried it for a generator we had at a cabin. Turned water to steam after a couple hours use.
You would be better to try building a doghouse or trading up to some thing quieter.

I believe that would depend upon how deep the water was. I am not a physicist but, I, even with COPD, could blow into a hose in less than a foot of water.

This response and the one prior makes me wonder. If there isn't any intelligent response to this, let's just forget it.
