I'm thinking a pair of these (or something like them) would probably do the trick for me.

Like I said, I don't need anything exotic, and I'm probably not looking at any really deep discharge in my circumstances most of the time... At least not on purpose!

Also, did you ever get the "burning smell" figured out? That definitely doesn't sound right...

Before I figured out that my choke was not adjusted correctly, I flooded it a couple of times by holding down the prime button too much and cranking it a lot. Perhaps the float was hanging up too. It really smelled like gas, not a burning odor.

I removed the single Group 27 flooded battery and installed two 300 AH Lifeline AGM 6 volt batteries. I boondock at Nascar races and the fridge was going into alarm if I ran the heat at night.

I will try priming longer. But I still would like to know what is causing this cranking issue that I described. It almost like a one crank with a dead battery, but will crank again if left for a few seconds.
It is currently 26 degrees this morning and being the first of the month I fired up my Onan 5500 for it's normal 1 hour monthly run with a load. I have never really counted the prime time, but just now I primed for 8 seconds and no start after 2-3 seconds of crank. Primed for another 5 seconds and then instant start. FYI

Did not pinpoint the burning smell in the cab after numerous cranking of the generator but I now prime for 10 sec after it lights up and haven’t had any issues starting or smelling. I am guessing it’s some type of relay or module up front that is connected to that jumpstart button on my dash and heated up from over cranking. But that’s just a “SWAG”!
