outside refrigerator side vent fan

In extreme summer heat has anyone connected a small fan to exterior of outside refrigerator side vent or just take side panel off for more venting. Have been looking at batt. Type mini fans...

We have, on occasion, taken the side access panel off, but really haven't had to too many times. It doesn't get really hot in NY like the southern, or western states. A battery powered fan on the inside of the fridge works just fine for us. There are some fan units you can buy, that mount under the fridge roof vent, to suck the heat up and out from behind it. Either way, ventilating the back side is a good idea.

You also have a roof vent over the fridge, so you actually get flow-through ventilation from the side to the roof to let heat out.

My 2017 Greyhawk has 2 fans at the top of the fridge that work great. I had a Lance camper for 25 years that I did install a small 12 volt fan in the back that did seem to improve fridge cooling.

I fabricated a little bracket for the fan and had it aimed straight up. To control it I added 2 thermal switches. One switch was mounted on the heating coil and the other was just mounted to the fridge chassis. I picked the thermal switch values so that the fan would only come on if the overall temp in the fridge area was above a certain level PLUS the fridge was in a cooling mode which was sensed by the thermal switch on the coil. Worked great!

The way these things work is by allowing the heat to exit the top vent. Anything that can be done to help this process allows the fridge to work better and these things need all the help they can get. Fans can be at the top and suck the air up or at the bottom and push the air up.

Our fridge has an upper vent instead of a roof vent even though it’s not in a slide. I was having cooling issues and added 4 computer fans to the upper vent and the fridge cools much better. The fans are wired through a thermal sensor that turns the fans on when the coils of the fridge unit hit 140 degrees.....works on its own and works great!

thanks, we have 2 battery fans on inside, but if coach frog. is on sunny side in hot weather frog temp rises. have not tried to remove side vent yet for additional cooling. if awning shades it from sun frog. is better. do not leave awning when we are sight seeing..
