Oxidation - Now What

We purchased our 2014 Jayco Greyhawk new in 2015. We had the outside surface coated and told do not wax. Last fall we noticed the cab was oxidizing. Thinking it was guaranteed under the coating, we took it back to the dealer. Our contract granted a reapply free after one year which we planned to have done in January before the next camping season so they said they would fix it when they did the reapply.

Long story short in February, we were told they never apply the coating on the cab over, so there was nothing they could do. By the way, the cab over was not an exclusion on our contract. UGH!

We have owned multiple camping units and have never had oxidation.

Now the question - what is the best way to fix it? Do it yourself, take it somewhere, or bite the bullet and have it painted?

orbital buffer and a orange pad or a wool pad and some 3m finnesse will clean it right up then plan on waxing it... that seems to be a rip off...

here is a link you can get it cheaper than amazon though... Harbor freight carries it sometimes..

https://www.amazon.com/3M-05928-Fine...esse+it+polish

if it is bad oxidation you may need to go up to a coarser compound but rule is start with the lightest and test if not enough then go to the next coarse don't use anything more than necessary...

good luck...

I second the above post about buffing with a light / medium polish and or possibly a compound, if it's extreme. If the oxidation is light, you may try a clay bar. Take a look at my results in this post: https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...lay-54826.html

From a post I did in 2014. We were one of the first Oxidation issues handled by JAYCO. I know that you do not have a warranty, but the story I the same.

*************************
If you have a cap with the dark gel coat, odds are VERY GOOD you will encounter the oxidation, no mater what wax you use or how many times you wax it. At the first indication of oxidation, take it in to an authorized dealer and have them contact Jayco.

There are only 2 options for this,
1- Replace the entire cap,
2- Remove ALL the Gel-coat down to the fiberglass and paint it.

When Jayco authorized the repainting of our cap, we selected a LIGHT color (matched the side color using a computer color scanner) and not the original dark color. This was the BEST decision we could have made!!!! On the original dark gel coat the temperature of the cap was over 200 degrees, with the new white painted cap, it has maxed out at 119 degrees. The interior is a LOT cooler with the light paint.

If you decide to go with a paint job, you can not paint over the GelCoat as the oxidation will eventually seep through the paint. The GelCoat needs to be sanded down to the fiberglass.

If you search "oxidation" you will find a lot of posts regarding this subject. This one has the most posts in it.

The RV dealer that painted it has a 5 year warranty on the paint job!

Win win situation for us!

Likely a win for the owner even if he has to cough up the cost of re-painting.
