Propane Check Valve Stuck

I stopped at Flying J this weekend to get my annual propane fill-up. The Tech at the service station told mt that my check valve appears to be stuck. Is there maintenance I should be doing on the valve? Is there work I can safely do to loosen/lubricate it? Or do I need to bite the bullet and take it in for service?

I recognize the dangers of working with propane so if it is not simple maintenance I understand the need to have a professional do the work.

Thanks in advance.

He said the tank has a check valve, maybe blow off valve???, can't remember the exact terminology. But he said it is to prevent the tank from over pressurizing. Should never happen now that they only fill to 80% of volume but still a safety feature that I think needs to be functioning.

Yeah - the tank has a Pressure Relief valve. Not sure how the tech new that unless he didn't see it open during filling.

Try calling an RV tech first, if you have a good local one and ask them if it's something they'd handle.

It's something I'd get replaced

Would have to done at a propane supplier. All the propane needs to be pumped out first.

Correct, it is the built in 50lb tank on the Greyhawk.

I agree with Grumpy. Find a propane supplier that can fill the tank and take it to them. The results may be the waste of some propane, but in the refilling of the tank, a propane supplier can analyze the problem and come up with a solution. Those tanks are no different than if its sitting next to a cabin, a portable tank for a bar b q or on a camper. The valves, check valves and all fittings are standardized.

I am wondering if he was describing a frozen check valve that sometimes happens during filling. The only other thing I can imagine is mud getting on it because it is hanging under a vehicle. I'm thinking miss-diagnoses, by an unqualified person.

There is a check valve in the hose...at least there is on my TT. I have 2 short black hoses that come off the tanks and into the switching regulator. A few years ago, I couldn't get gas out of one tank and I swapped hoses to troubleshoot the problem and found the hose was bad. Upon inspection, I found an arrow on the brass fitting indicating it was a directional hose with a check valve. The check valve failed and blocked the flow of gas.

There is no maintenance on internal check valves and I would never add oil to a gas system.

Thanks for the input

Thanks to all for the input. I am calling today to book the Greyhawk in for end of season service. The garage I am using services a variety of big trucks. Hopefully the garage has a propane guy who can look at it. My RV dealer is in chaos right now because they are moving to a new site but the existing building is being demolished before the new one is ready so they are not a reliable option for the next 6 months or so.
