Hello again. My 2nd Q. We have a jeep liberty 2015 that we will be towing. The dealership said a brake system on the jeep was not needed, while the tow-hitch company said it was boarder-line.


Can Anyone give some advise/experience on towing a jeep? Do I really need a brake system on the jeep while towing?

I don't tow a vehicle, but I wouldn't tow a 4000 lb. load without some sort of brake controller to stop it.

Most states require a break away system. Just depends on weight
Az 4000#
Cali is like 2500#

Best is to look at states you will travel in and decide

But loosing your toad and killing someone could be a nasty lawsuit

Would you tow a 3000 lb trailer behind the MH without brakes? Good luck stopping if you would.

Ive been looking the the break buddy systems.
There is the Vantage select and the select 3.
any differences in these units?

The RVibrake3 may be worth a look at also.

Mine is a Demco stay in play I think

Mine is fully wired in, flip a switch it's active and runs just like trailer brakes on a trailer with the added Break Away system

Some use a briefcase style system, sits on the floorboards...I didn't want that

Simple is easier

I had mine installed, was well worth it

Yes, brakes are going to be required at the weight of the Liberty in most states. Some states require ANYTHING being towed to have brakes.

Aside from compliance with the law, it's a good idea. I neglected to put my brake system in last time I towed because I was going a very short distance (From storage to repair shop). I had to stop short at a changing traffic light, and it was quite a bit more difficult. I made the stop line, but barely. Would've been a piece of cake if I had my Patriot running...

I use the Blue Ox Patriot 2 ("briefcase" style) because I potentially tow 2 different Jeeps. So I can move my braking system from one vehicle to another if I so choose. The only thing that needs to be "permanently" installed is the breakaway switch.

49 of 50 USA states require tow vehicle brakes. I bought the RVi Brake 3 and am very happy how easy it was to set up and how good it worked when I hit the RV brakes the Jeep would follow almost instantly. It uses inertial pneumatic (as opposed to electric) braking.

No, I would not tow without a brake on the toed. If I get into an accident and the authorities said I didn't have brakes on the Jeep, I'm sure my insurance would balk at paying since I was knowingly breaking the law.

Honestly, RVone guy who gave us the walk around, when I asked did he think the jeep needed a brake system, he flat out said no [this from the RV dealer who is all over the country]. The tow-hitch company was heads or tails. Since I understand the laws of physics I started looking to get one.. dw

Funny you mention this one. The hitch company recommends this unit. Ive read that sometimes it has signal issues. Do you have this unit?

And they'll tell you your VW Beetle will tow a 27 ft TT all day long, no problem.

I've learned over the years to verify my own facts, and I don't put much weight in what a sales person says. And I've found that for some reason, RV sales people especially, for the most part, have no idea what they're talking about.

Good on you for seeing through the mess and deciding to install a brake.
