redhawk tire mount

Does anyone have a different way of mounting a spare tire on the bumper, rather than the receiver hitch?

tire mount

our hankook tire 10 ply and rim are hitch mounted. I think the combination weighs around 70 lbs. I do not trust the bumper mount, bumper is thin metal and the bouncing/oscillation going down the road puts additions stress on the bumper.just my opinion.

I mounted my spare onto the center shaft of my cargo bin by drilling holes and using grade 8 bolts and nuts. It's similar to what you want to do with that bike rack except you want yours in the inside. Not sure if you have enough room between the back of the RV and that middle shaft of the bike rack to hold the wheel.

One thing I can tell you is that it is extremely heavy to flip up my cargo basket with that wheel on there. I have not yet driven with that basket down with the wheel mounted.

I gather you have plans for the receiver hitch. If those plans are for a TOAD, consider putting the spare in the TOAD. If the plans are for bicycles, this is no help. Please share what you plan to do with the receiver hitch.

I keep the spare under the bed. Access from inside and outside storage compartment. Easy to get to if I need it, out of the way since we don't use the space too much and no issues with the weight.

I have the 31FS. The rear driver side storage is where I keep all my tools, hoses, etc. I take down the Bungie cord that gives me access to the storage under the bed. I keep it in a black yard waste bag so I don't have to worry about it getting anything dirty or have that rubber smell.

I have mine mounted to a receiver spare tire holder, then put into a two into one receiver hitch. This way I can still flat tow my jeep. No clearance or wobbly hitch issues either.

I think that is a bike rack for the hitch.

My trailer came with a bumper mount for the spare tire... I took it off and gave it away, put the spare under the bed.

Back trailer bumpers are usually pretty flimsy, exposed to sun and theft.

I have my propane grill rack mounted on the bumper.

Gr-8 bolts...How thick is the metal you are mounting the bolts on? 3/8" Gr-8 bolts would suggest the minimum thickness of the brackets should be 3/8" steel. The mounting strength is limited by the weakest link. Gr-8 bolts into 1/6" thick steel is only about equal to Gr 2

I did a custom bumper mount because I’m in no physical condition to crawl under my RV any more, especially under the duress of changing a flat!

I bought a spare tire hitch carrier, bolted to the rear bumper, but had to have it custom welded. He Remove my bumper, reinforce the entire bumper and made and welded custom brackets to go to the rear hitch to support It, It’s very stout!

I first mounted it and put a stainless steel, 2k lbs, marine grade turnbuckle, mounted it from the carrier to the back plate of the hitch support, but the turnbuckle snapped, and then all the welds started cracking. That’s why I bought it to a welding shop. One of the best modifications I’ve ever done! The carrier I purchased is made to mount on the side of a boat trailer type. The wooden block I made is 2 4x4 CCA post pieces, I did this so the deep rim sits properly on the carrier. It works for me and is very accessible!

Very nice. Hopefully you did some type of extra support, because these bumpers are very thin and either the welds will crack or the thin bumper will tear over time. This has happened to many others on this forum. Just keep an eye on it. Mine cracked twice over 3 years, that’s when I had it totally taken apart and repaired properly.

Safe travels.

JohnnyNorthland, thank you. The bumper bracket is attached where the bumper is attached to the frame rail. Never the less, I agree. The tire mount, tire and wheel are very heavy. I have been inspecting the weld joint regularly. Holding up for three years. Now to address the rusty bumper.

I used the grade 8 to prevent the rust. The shaft steel thickness is 1/8". I put washers also to reinforce the holes.

Yea, keep a close eye on it. thin bumper and So-so welding is the Achilles heels of your whole set up. Like I said, mine cracked twice until I had it professionally done correctly. Now I can jump on the tire and the cantilever weight of the spare doesn’t even make a difference!

The Roadmaster tire mount # 195225 from e-trailer seems to be the ultimate for anyones spare tire mounting needs.......
