Replacing steel wheels

Has anyone replaced their factory steel wheel with Aluminum? If so did you replace just the front and outer duals, or all 6, and what other issues did you encounter? Can you have a mix of aluminum and steel on the rear? And most of all, are you satisfied with the result?

Just remember if you go aluminum you should torque them down 3 times before you get to the final #. If your final torque is say 110 then you go 75-95 then 110 as your final torque #.

You can mix steel and aluminum on the rears. It’s how most rear duals are done from the factory. I always kept my eyes out for cheap take offs from a ford running 19.5 wheels and tires. They handle the weight so much better than the 16’s. I was definitely going to look in earnest when I needed new tires but I never got that far.

I have replaced mine with machined finish aluminum wheels. I really like them and I don’t have to worry about bent, wobbly or lost wheel liners. I replaced the front and two outer rears. The only issue one will encounter with replacing only 4 wheels, rather than 6, is when rotating tires. When rotating the ones on steel into the rotation pattern, they will have to demount and remount on the aluminum ones. However, I have had mine for 15,000 miles and have only needed to rotate the aluminum ones because after taking tread depth readings on all 6, the differences were negligible and not enough to go through the trouble of mounting, demounting and rotating the inside duals into the mix. I deal with Discount Tire and they rotate and balance mine at no charge, and will do the same for all who do business with them. The mix of aluminum and steel is just fine and is done all of the time on big trucks, busses, class A RVs, etc. As with any aluminum wheels, they must be retorqed after the 1st 50 miles, but only after the very first installation.

We have the factory Alcoa aluminum wheel option on ours. The inside duals are just steel not aluminum. Only the 4 outsiders are aluminum.

We did get the chrome metal extended valve stems. Makes airing up very convenient and easy.

Any suggestions on where to get a set of 4 aluminum wheels? Aprox cost ?

When I was looking for my 2018 Greyhawk in Sept/ Oct it was very hard finding a leftover with the alum wheel option. I ended up with the 2 AC option instead . Also will it make a major difference in weight savings?

Discount Tire - Right around $600 mounted and balanced. I don’t think there is any weight savings, but it is unsprung weight anyway.Click image for larger version
