Running fridge while traveling

We have never run our fridge while driving in our Greyhawk Prestige 29MVP but are taking longer trips and would like to run it. Our fridge has 2 options, AC and propane. When using propane do I need to have the main power switch in the cabin on to provide DC to the fridge propane system?

I run mine all the time while traveling. I plug it in the night before and keep it in auto so when I unplug it switches over to propane.

Me Too

I also plug mine in over night and then just let the auto take over when we unplug and pull down the road. Been doing it for years that way and so far NO problems

I have a question, if you are supposed to keep fridge level when parked to keep from messing it up, how can it be ran driving down the road without it messing up?

The problem with an unlevel RV refrigerator is caused when being out of level prevents the ammonia in the cooling system from circulating properly. Driving down the road sloshes the ammonia around, allowing the circulation to work as designed. No problem.

Because it actually helps keep the refrigerant (ammonia/water mix) moving. When parked and not level the liquid can stop circulating since it pools at the low point of the coils.

Yes, you need DC power to your RV refrigerator to allow it to run on propane.

Thank you REWahoo and Grumpy for your intelligent answers. I did not know that was how the rv fridges worked . I am about to go on first trip with mine and went to search on this forum about using fridge while driving and here it was. Thanks again.

We run ours the entire time we have it out of storage. We did it with our TT as well.

One thing about the MH is that the fridge will run on electricity if you're running the generator in transit. Our rig gets pretty warm inside on the hottest days, so I'll often run the Genny while motoring down the road. On the not-quite-as-hot days, I'll just run the dash AC and it keeps us mostly comfortable; fridge runs on propane then.

travelling fridge

I recently read an article that asserted that a propane fridge while driving is a fire hazard. Anyone heard anything about that?

Everyone is still debating over that "Question" so with the answers here you have to make your own informed decision. I do not for safety reason and have a inverter for during travel.

We always run our fridge while driving and towing our previous toy haulers and now also with our new redhawk 29xk. Main house power on and on propane setting, just make sure you turn it off if stopping to fuel up and then just restart it afterwards.

Is the issue of having the RV level when running the fridge just when it is on propane? Does it matter at all when running on electricity? Thanks for someone to clarify this to me.

When on the road and moving it has no effect on the chemical running process of the fridge, even traveling on an incline.

I have a Jayco Greyhawk 29MV, and run on propane whenever traveling. If mode in Auto, then once shore power restored, fridge automatically switches. Just remember to shut off when refueling, and if going thru tunnels.
