Rust? or mold look to the plastic trim

I'd like to see if anyone has had this happen to their rig.

This started within a couple of years. Its stored outside and covered in the usually New England winter.

Thank you for any information. I'm almost on the verge of ripping it off and applying a new body trim.

That's mold and is really pretty common on older rv's. It can be cleaned but I doubt you'll get it all off. It's impregnated into the rubber by this time. It could also be sun damage (fading). If it's fading, you can buy rolls of weather stripping for cheap. Gold Eagle (303) makes a mold and mildew remover. Get the marine version. I use it on my boat and it's awesome. Expensive...but awesome.

That screw cover comes in rolls, can be bought by the foot. Pull it out of the painted aluminum screw strip and replace. The painted aluminum screw strip cleans easily, the vinyl screw cover not so much. Easy replacement. Yeah, it's some kind of mold, mildew or whatever.

Is this what you are referencing? Not that mine looks moldy, but it does seem to have lost its bright white shine and sheen so I may change mine out as well.

Not that I recommend or not this seller (although I have heard good things about them), just linked to them for a reference to the vinyl trim that I suspect Yooper906 is talking about. Also, I see they have a few different widths and lengths and colors, so keep that in mind if anyone needs to purchase some of this. ~CA

Hi All, I'm kicking this thread up again. I have the exact same issue...my RV looks identical to @chevyman30.

What needs to be bought? Has anyone done this fix? How is it performed (removal, replacement)? Link to what is needed to buy?

Thanks for your help

Hi there,

I have some good news. The fix is removing the old molding as there's no track behind it. The factory told me there was and I gambled. The molding is held on by 2 thin strips of 3m tape. Just make sure you really clean up the residue. Goop remover worked well for me.

The replacement was an Amazon molding. nearly identical to OEM.

This is my experience and attached are pictures..

I don't see your pictures...but would love to...if you can share that would be great. But I do see the link to the product on Amazon. Amazing!!! Did you do anything special for removal...like a razor blade or something? Did you use clear caulk after install...or just the 3M tape?

So, it says 'Plenty to do one vehicle'

How much is there per role? Will it do a class C camper that's 36 feet?

I bought 2 rolls yesterday to do my 31FS. There is easily 20+ feet on each side, plus there is a strip across the back too (another 8 feet).

If your strip is hard to remove or install consider a hair dryer to warm up the plastic a bit. Don't use a heat gun, way to hot! I use an old one of spouses that has a broken switch and only runs on low anyway and it worked great on Dicor removal also.

Quick update...I've already removed my current trim molding, and cleaned off the existing 3M tape that held it on (used Goo Gone). That took a while. There is still a layer of silicon that I need to get off...which was used on the top edge of the trim. That is going to require the use of my hair dryer (like RogerR said) to get it off correctly. There are also screws under the molding. I plan to put a shot of silicone on top of them too, as a few of them are a little rusty, before I put the new trim on. New trim comes today, hoping its a good color match...else I'll return it and just go with black.
