Scan D gage Useful?

I'm thinking of purchasing a Scan D Gage to help with fuel range decisions as we have all found the Freightliner fuel gage highly inaccurate. Do those of you who have one find the Scan D gage gives you accurate fuel used readings? Are you happy with your purchase?

I have a Scangauge II so not sure if it is the same as you referenced but once it's calibrated I get to within 1/2 -1 mpg from long hand figuring so I would say it is pretty close if we are talking about the same thing. I am using it on Sprinters for the past 3 years.

You might want to double check the connection where it's located on your chassis. We have a ScanGauge II we bought for our first gas coach. We bought the ScanGauge D for our diesel pusher coach with the Cummins. Our present coach is a diesel engine but uses the square OBD connector and not the round diesel engine connector.
Bottom line, we have a diesel engine but are connected with our ScanGauge II OBD.

We wouldn't be without ours after many years.

Yes. It is what I use.

Mike - thought I would add a little installation insight. The diagnostic connection on our Senecas is under the dash to the left of the steering column. More or less behind the ignition switch. The ScanGauge connector hangs straight down and is somewhat heavy. It just presses upward onto the connector, held by friction. On mine, a good bump would cause it to fall off, when that happens the display goes dead. I got good at sticking it back on while driving!

Another forum members suggested a way to attach it securely, yet allowing easy removal when/if Freightliner needs to plug in. I drilled and tapped a hole through the side of ScanGauge where it mates with the truck connector. Then I used a small thumbscrew on which I sharpened the end to a dull point. The thumbscrew threads into the side and bites in just enough to hold it securely, yet not damage the vehicle connector.

Thought you might want to know, would be easier to modify before installation.

I need to be sold a bit by users of the Scan D regarding what additional data it can provide. I feel transmission temp is a big thing needed. What other data do users find useful?

For us it's the actual numbers and not just another idiot gauge needle. Then there's the ability to read codes and clear them if needed.
Sometimes I might glance at the MPG for curiosity, but we didn't buy a motorhome for gas mileage.

Hi all,

Just lurking and saw your post. We are taking delivery on a new Greyhawk 29MV next week. Is there a problem with the fuel gauge on these, too? Do we need to be thinking of getting something like this?

We don't think you would need it for that reason. If there is any problem with the fuel gauge you should be able to take it to a Ford dealer for repairs.

The ScanGauge is more of a want and not need.
