Seneca entry door interior light switch
My Seneca, and I am sure other model units, has a magnetic switch on the entry door that activates some interior lights when the entry door is opened. Mine has operated erratically lately, sometimes the light would not come on with the door open despite the wall switch being in the automatic" position. Other times the lights would stay on with the door closed, again with the switch in automatic. The magnetic switch and its mating magnet were still secured in their proper mounting positions. There is a second magnetic switch right below the one for the lights, it controls the operation of the entry steps. It works fine.
Troubleshooting began, first checked the 12-volt relay (behind the control panel), it was fine. Used my strong magnet to try to trigger the switch, no joy. My diagnosis - bad magnetic switch. Off to the local RV parts center to get a switch. The parts guy asked me what color my old switch was, told him it was black. He reaches under the counter, hands me a very similar looking Kwikee (Lippert now) switch, and off to home I go. Now this isn't my first rodeo repairing electrical components, so I decided to temporarily connect things up to test it all out before snaking the new switch wires through the stepwell wall and making permanent connections. Good thing I did!
Temporarily connected, the light responded to the switch but opposite how it should. Open the door the lights would go off, close the door and they would come on. Hmmmm. Some fast internet research revealed there are two switches from Kwikee that look nearly the same except for color. One of the replacement switches is normally open (no connection) until the magnet is near. Those are black. But the switch I actually needed is normally closed (making the connection) until the magnet is next to it. Those switches are white. So back to the RV place to get a white switch which they had quite a few in stock.
Hooked the white switch up, everything works perfectly. Button it all up and put the first switch I bought (black) in my spare parts box since it is the correct switch for my steps if it ever quits!
Kwikee (Lippert, LCI) part numbers:
Normally OPEN (Black) switch - 905323000
Normally CLOSED (White) switch - 905312000
Sometimes the suppliers drop the zeros at the end of the part numbers. The switches "normal" state is when the magnet is away from the switch.

Well our 2018 doesn’t have that nice feature but now that you told me about it I have to do it . My wife hates walking in and even though the light switches never move, she can’t seem to find them!

Not familiar with the 'automatic' switch; are your referring to the steps on/off switch?

No, my front set of overhead lights has a switch (along with the rear set, security light, and porch light, that has three positions while the other 3 switches there have only 2 (on/off). Up position on that swich is lights on regardless of door position, center is off, also regardless of door. But switched down that front switch allows the lights (via a relay) to respond to the door magnetic switch. On when open, off when closed.
Hopefully it is visible in my attached picture.

Thanks for the pic. We don’t have that auto option switch on our 2016.

I was not aware Jayco eliminated that function. It's a shame, it is handy coming into the unit when dark.

Rob,
On ours.. the magnetic switch is feeding a relay that is right behind the light switch.
We have to take the kitchen cabinet all apart to get to it.
This pic was when I tore that all apart to get to the back of the power switches to wire in our dock-lights that illuminate the area on the passenger side. .

Easier on a TS for sure, 6 screws and I am into my control panel. I wonder why Jayco discontinued offering it?

I like this idea. When we have hookups we usually leave a light on for going in and out but when boondocking we don’t and it would be nice to have a light come on. I was thinking about this driving home from this weeks trip I decided it would be easier to just add a door switch, put LED strip lights under the kitchen cabinets toekick and wire it all through a main switch and a timed relay. When the main switch is on and the door is opened the lights come on for the amount of time set up on the relay so the light stays on when the door is shut. Should be a simple install and I pretty much have everything already and I have used the timer relays on several projects, they are cheap and work great.

As an 15 owner... we did not know that the later models are missing this VERY IMPORTANT feature!
We can disable this, make the main room lights stay on... or put them on the door switch. It is real convenient to open the Seneca door and the lights turn on... I could not imagine not having this working (like what Rob had to fix).

That would have been a great feature as would a pump switch located in the bathroom. It is a pta to want to use the shower or rest room and realize you have to go the front of the motorhome to turn it on..might be a good model for this winter.

I have 3 too, bathroom, front control panel, wet bay.
Newer units have only one heat pump, no auto-entry lighting, and no bathroom water pump switch.
Thor cost cutting?

Yep, out 2018 only has the one on the main panel and one in the wet bay. Our 37RB has 2 bathrooms with no switches. It really doesn’t bother us as out old Class A only had one in the coach too so we are used to it. We do have 2 heat pumps still though. My entry door lighting should be done tomorrow after the Brown truck shows up. I have been messing with that programmable timer relay and it’s pretty cool you can do a lot of different things with it. Using this one as there is a lot more documentation on it and easier to program.

Now let’s not get carried away with this. How hard is it to just yell from the bathroom “JOANNE, TURN ON THE WATER SWITCH. HEY, DID YOU HEAR ME? JOANNE?”
Ok, yeah it would be nice to have a switch in the bathroom. They seemed to omitted many switches from mine. Sigh

I can hear Stacy now... oh, no I can't - she can't hear me as she is outside!

Yeah, we only have one switch inside ours too. Just when I think I'm about to complain about it, I see real campers next site over with their tent and all. Then I realize I can live one switch.

Ok...All this talk about the water pump switch has me wondering. Our Eagle only has the one pump switch inside on the main control panel, and another outside where the water hook-up is. We generally leave it on except when we leave the trailer, in which case we do turn it off, just in case.
Is this bad? Should we be turning the pump off all the time when we aren't using the water? Our pump seems to shut itself off just fine when the pressure is up to normal.
I wouldn't like getting up during the night and not have water pressure to flush.

We leave ours on all the time. Being a motorhome, we just turn it on right before we leave home and leave it on the whole trip. Been doing this for 35+ years.

Ours is still on 24/7... is all the time except when I am filling the fresh tank.
Yes.. when we are in a park - we fill the fresh tank full each day - then run the water pump 100% of the time. We find that the water pressure is higher, more stable and we get better showers running on pump, than we do at any park water supply.
While we keep just the outside wet bay switch ON about 95% of the time, so when I am filling the tank, I don't have to go back inside and turn off the interior switches. I have been known to forget to turn the wet bay pump switch back on at times... I always discover that lapse of action when I am sitting in the bathroom, thankful that the switch is right there in easy reach.
