Yep... that is why many of the manufacturers used to make the fridge a three-way instead of the current 2-way. We had the choice of 120vAC -or- Propane -or- 12vDC. You could run down the road with the fridge on 12vDC as long as the engine was running to charge the battery from the 30A load that the 12v heater element took.

I remember forgetting to switch the fridge back to AC and ending up with a dead battery a few hours later.

I wish the inverter ran the air conditioner so that I didn't have to run the generator when dry camping in Walmart or the like during hot weather. I have already installed a second house battery.

To run the load a single AC would create you would need a much bigger inverter than Jayco installs, as well as tow a trailer with just batteries on it! The 12-volt amp draw from running an AC on an inverter would be staggering. Two "regular" batteries would only last minutes, not hours, providing the amperage an AC unit would consume.

(In my mind) I always imagined that the 12VDC was controlled by the ignition switch. Switch off and it would drop out. Would still be good for hours for transfer to LPG/GEN/Shoreline
