Someplace to go before Angel Fire

We are planning our summer trip and need some suggestions. Our first scheduled stop is two nights at Top Sail Park in Santa Rosa Beach Florida so DW can get a couple of beach days. We then have about three weeeks to get to Angel Fire, NM where we are staying for about a month until right after Labor Day. I tried getting some time at Tiger Run Resort in Breckinridge Colorado before Angel Fire but they are pretty much sold out for anything more than two nights.

With the goal of seeking cooler temps, any suggestions on where to go somewhere near New Mexico or southern Colorado?

Mark, we are going to be in Angel Fire the last week of June first week on July. We are staying at the Angel Fire RV Resort.

There is a nice campground in Red River NM about 45min to 1 hour drive from Angle Fire. Road Runner RV Park. Lot's of stuff to do around town.

Sante Fe is a favorite of ours. Taos also. Actually you can see all these places from Angel Fire as they are only a hour or two in one direction or the other. Some of our favorite places to visit. We plan to take day trips to each of these during our stay in Angel Fire.

We passed through Angel Fire while returning from Breckenridge two years ago and loved it. We spent two days there and decided to go back. We will be there from August 8 through Labor Day. I think Angel Fire is one of the nicest RV resorts wee have ever been to. Since we will be there for a month we will have plenty of day trips.

Enjoy your stay there and please share your experience.

I highly recommend looking at Silverton CO. I go there every year. It is very scenic and there is lots to see and do. All in walking distance from your RV. There are multiple RV resorts to stay at, I would prefer Silver Summit RV or Red Mountain RV. There are MANY jeep trails, or you can rent a jeep/OHV, you have the Silverton Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad, lots of small shops, good dining and the views are unbeatable.

I have also heard, but never been yet, good things about Ruidoso NM.

I too have stayed at Angel Fire and love it there. My wife and I have done a few small weekend trips there just to escape from Albuquerque every now and then. While you are there, make sure you go and eat at the Country Club at least once. Its a little pricey, but very worth it.

I would like to know where you are staying in Angel Fire. I plan to go there or Red River this summer.

The caverns at Carlsbad are one of the most awesome things I have ever seen. 325 miles south of your destination but definitely on the way. Granted it will be rather warm but at least it's not the 90% humidity we Floridians are used to. I would suggest at least two days. We stayed at the Carlsbad KOA and were very pleased with the arrangements.

Twice, we have stayed at Dolores River Campground just east of Dolores, Colo., which is near Cortez, Colo. It would be a drive of several hours but through pretty country. And there's lots of Native American history in the Cortez area..............

With an average August weather of 71 day and 38 night, Silverton it is. I got the last spot in the Silverton Lakes RV Park for 5 nights. Water and electric only. Every other campground was full. Thanks for the suggestion RoRoRyan.

So the reserved spots for this summer so far are Top Sail in Santa Rosa Beach FL, Eurika Springs Arkansas, Thackerville OK (Chickasaw Reservation Casino), Silverton Co and Angel Fire NM. I figure after Labor Day we can play it as we go.

Thanks for all the really good suggestions. Last summer I asked the same question about the east coast and ended up in Shanandoa Valley which we really enjoyed and never thought about. What a great resource this group is.
