Spare Tire Mount

I am purchasing a spare tire for my 2019 Greyhawk 31FS. My intentions were to mount it on the rear bumper, and I am looking for a mount. ANY SUGGESTIONS? I also read in other forums that some owners just carry the tire with out the rim. Others suggest mounting on front of vehicle. WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS?

When we bought our Greyhawk 31FS, new in 2009, Jayco still supplied spare tires. Ours came from the factory mounted on the rear bumper. We removed the tire and the mount from the rear bumper, because the tire didn't allow us to mount all 4 of our bikes on the hitch mounted bike rack. We couldn't move the tire to the right because the ladder was there. If we moved it to the left, it would have blocked the license plate.

We moved the spare under the bed and kept the mount in our garage. When we traded it in, we left the spare under the bed and put the mount under the bed as well. The tire didn't take up that much room. We kept the cover on the tire, so it didn't make anything dirty when we laid anything on top of the spare tire.

One of the problems with just getting a tire is some road side assistance plans won't cover removing the flat tire and putting the spare on. For us, AAA told us that they will only swap a fully mounted spare.

I mounted my spare on the front, using a front-mount hitch receiver and the Roadmaster tire carrier.
For a while, I had the spare mounted in the rear hitch receiver, but I moved it to the front. Mounting the bicycles on the front blocked some of the headlights.

I have a 2009 Greyhawk the spare was on the bumper as others stated we also moved ours under the bed tire mounted on rim. I thought about the front but was afraid the air flow may be reduced to cool the big v10.

It's far enough forward away from the grille that it's not a problem. I always use a scangauge to monitor temps, and they've been fine.

Yes, there may be interference with straight-in airflow while driving down the road, but there has been no indication at all of a problem.

I just installed a front hitch receiver and moved my spare from the rear. My thinking is that any weight I can move forward will be good for balance. Thought a lot about possible air flow restriction but have spoke with a couple of others who have done this with no apparent problems. Using a CURT spare tire mount that positions the bottom of the tire out from the grill and bumper.

So, this is an experiment. Will share the results after our next trip.

Same here. Love it!

Been running like this for a couple years now, and have never noticed any difference in cooling. My front mounted receiver angles out though, and there’s probably a foot of space between the tire and grille.

What motorhome do you have? I haven't seen a spare mounted like this that I can remember...care to share a picture? Thanks!

2015 Greyhawk 31FS

Don’t think I’ve ever posted pics of mine, but looks very similar to the set up posted in this post thread.

Rear wheel same as front?

I seen this thread and I had the same thoughts. But I don’t know if the front and rear wheels are interchangeable. Does anyone know since the rest wheels are dualies?

If you have the aluminum wheels, there is an issue. The inners are not aluminum from talking to the dealer so they can't be rotated.

Other than that, all the steelies are the same size and should be rotated about every oil change (5-6k miles). Front to inner rear, inner rear to outer, and outer rear to front.

Wow, they have some that are aluminum? I would much rather just have the steel wheels that i have, solid and makes it easy to rotate and clean up with chrome trim.
