Stress Cracking on front cap below Greyhawk decal

Looking for opinions on this.....Made second trip to dealer yesterday to have front cap cracking looked at. New Greyhawk29mv, 2400 miles. Dealer says they will not attempt repair that it's a factory job because the complete front cap needs replaced due to stress cracking. Now, this is a brand new RV, do I let them repair it or fight for a complete new RV? I don't feel that it's right to purchase a new unit then haft to have major repairs completed. What is your thoughts?

I have some spider cracks around my windshield and where the front cap meets the sidewalls, Jayco will repair this at the body shop at Jayco, I am scheduled to go out to get this done in April.

Wow that's far worse than anything we have experienced , we had some stress cracking in the gel coat that was repaired and we have a few more than need to be looked at , we even hit a pigeon at 70 miles an hour in almost the same spot but didn't incur any damage

That's why the dealer won't touch it. There saying a complete new cap is needed and they can't do that. So now we wait on Jayco to answer.

My two cents would be that you don't really have a case for a 'complete new RV'. Sounds like a bad fiberglass job, doesn't seem to be common. No reason to think that the whole coach is bad.

Plus, I think I've read that there is no Lemon Law for RVs.

I say, that it does have to be fixed, and I'll be all over Jayco for resolution.

Yeah, this isn't true. Not sure where you read it.. but just for the record.

This isn't a lemon law case in my opinion, but RV's are totally covered by the Federal lemon law. It's not specific to vehicles, it covers all consumer products. Computers, Cars, Lawn Mowers, Televisions, etc. RV's are not excluded.

Google the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. (i.e. the federal lemon law)

You have to be prepared to not only sue Jayco, but to pay your lawyer if you lose. You can't sue the dealer in this case. It's Jayco's liability. Give them the opportunity to fix it right *again* and start a paper trail should you ever have to pursue something.

If they were repairing this same problem for the 4th time, and for some reason told you they weren't fixing it anymore (Jayco that is) you might have a case.

Being a boater for over 30 years I have a lot of experience with gel coat and fiberglass cracks in hulls. How they start and how they can be repaired before they go too far. However I have zero knowledge and experience with coaches. That said, the second group of pics are spider cracks which we see often on older boats. They can be fixed. The first set of picks that show larger cracks which tells me something is going on inside the layers. Looks like separation issues. I wouldn't accept anything other than a part replacement. Nice that is can be replaced. On a boat that would be a full re lay up, glass matting etc. out for half the season. Again I can only base my opinions on my boating experience.

I doubt JAYCO will repair it they will probably replace the cap. The Factory Service Center does great work. Also JAYCO does not make the caps.

Had a stress crack in the front cap of my camper. Jayco covered it under warranty no questions asked. Dealer replaced front cap on it. The front of an RV is alot more complex than a camper so I can see where they may not want to attempt the repair locally. May be set for a roadtrip back to Jayco service center. Good luck and keep us posted.

Can't help with the fix, but do feel the pain. Last full time rig we had (Cedar Creek fifth wheel), had 2 front cap replacements and one repair due to cracking (Less than 1 year). They never could figure out what was going on. After numerous issues, and I hated to do it to somebody, we sold it on consignment. Maybe it served somebody else better, but was a thorn in our side and had to go.

We have the same issue on our 2012 Melbourne, spider cracks on rear cap just below rear window, because vehicle is out of warranty, nothing they can do. For as much money as you pay for an RV, you would think it would hold together better than 4 years. We have almost 15,000 miles on vehicle.

Oh but that's not all of the Warranty story. Also have severe stress cracking on front cap area, submitted pictures to dealer and Jayco and they authorized a front cap Replacement. Yesterday dealer calls and wants the RV because the new cap has arrived. I sure hope this goes well and don't leak when completed.

It's good to know that Jayco stepped up and you did not get the runaround to fix your rigs problem.

Thanks for telling us the rest of the story.

Well it's off to the dealer to drop off the Greyhawk to have the front cap replaced. Not crazy about leaving it at the dealer for so long plus it's only 8 degrees out there this morning.

Same issue here with my Grayhawk MV but cracks are not as deep. Dealer is not making repairs but referred me to someone that does a lot of work for them. I was able to get Jayco to pre approve the cost reimbursement. Took delivery on this RV in March and have had multiple quality issues like slide gouging the vinyl floor, tankless WH replacement, out of alignment, rear suspension not adjusted correctly, carpet in bedroom has rolls, roof access ladder pulled out of the fiberglass in two locations, numerous bolts not tightened. I will never buy Jayco again. Contacted Jayco direct and that was a joke. I personally like the dealer but they clearly have been down this road before and know the drill of what to do and basically said nothing. I would have filed a suit but arbitration agreement was signed as is the case with every major purchase in my state. I asked about not signing arbitration agreement at closing and was told they would not sell unless I did. The arbitrator is hired by Jayco and after a small amount of research I realized there was no point in trying. This thing is a lemon and I have little doubt there won't be additional issues in my future. Also, it costs me about $50 to drive the RV to the dealer for the repairs each time and Jayco will not reimburse for that.

I had my 2015 31FS in twice for cracks in the gel coat, so I know the feeling of how angry this makes one. The first time was literally two weeks after I took delivery. I was fortunate that the dealer and Jayco covered the work under warranty right away. However, I was a little less pleased when I had to return it to the dealer when outside trim started popping off the outside of the rig in some significant locations, (side and rear walls, front cap to side walls). I know these things bounce around going down the highway, but some of these issues really look like they need better QA. I am though still very pleased with Jayco and my local dealer, and I am starting on researching my next Jayco MH (wishing there was a DP option).
