suggestions on aligning up your waste outlet at dump site

Been rv'ng for many years and browsing forums but have never seen tips on how to align your waste outlet to the dump station inlet. I always try to judge the distance initially by eye and judgement only to have to jump out of the door, run back to see how close I am and then adjust as required. I use and prefer a shorter hose so accuracy is needed.

I thought of mounting a type of backup camera near my waste valve and using that to accurately line up from the drivers seat. But, I'm guessing a lot of people have their own method and would be interested to hear how you have perfected this ritual.

I do have a method. It is my wife standing near the inlet and giving a hand sign when I am lined up. We are usually in phone contact during any backing or alignment maneuvers.

Fortunately I can see my waste dump clearly in my mirror.

I wonder if one of the devices made to help people backup without a spotter could be used. The ones that are kinda like a tennis ball on a collapsible rod.

If the rv didn't have any metal for a magnet, maybe a high grade suction cup could hold something to mark the spot.

Back when I was joining the military they made a big deal out of the depth perception test. They said many people don't have it and don't know it. I could see that making it harder to line up no matter how well you can see it.

I too, use a short hose. I do not think I have any special technique. My discharge is a few feet behind the wheels. I do have very large mirrors that extend waaaay out, so I can easily see down the side of my TT. I watch the tires, and guess. Get out, walk out away from the TV a few feet, to see the discharge easier, and adjust if needed. If the lighting is bad, I will stop short, get out estimate how much farther forwards to pull up. I try not to back up, as there always seems to be someone pulling in behind me.

I have though about added an old fashipn “curb feeler” or something simular to indicate where the discharge is at.

My wife and I have used Walkie-Talkies for years whenever we spot our RV. She stands where she can see everything; water, pedestal, and sewer dump and relays the information to me. We also have a stick to measure for slide out clearance to make sure the slide won't hit anything after we park.

The inconsistency of hookups in RV parks is amazing. Some RV park designers have obviously never seen an RV, let alone used hookups. We stayed at one in Yuma where the water and electric were at the very back center of the pad, and the sewer hookup was all the way up front...and unreachable with 20 feet of sewer hose. The ones I hate have the sewer hookup about a foot above ground...

If I’m not lining up properly I just get back in the car and move forward.

How short of a hose do you use?

There are several come-backs for that one that I started and then just decided to let it pass.

I use the Rhinoflex extension. Stores at 39" and I can fully extended it is 10'. If needed I can go 20' but that would be showing off.

Sounds like our models are very different. My outlet is in font of the rear wheels and on the drivers side so it is very easy to get within 10’. I forgot different models have outlets in different locations. I think I remember one post about the waste outlet on the passenger side which would be an issue.

It would be relatively easy to hook up a camera to give you a better view.
I have the following camera that I can live view video on my phone via WiFi. It comes with several ways to mount it. You could mount it when you are breaking down camp and remove it as you dump. It also can be used as a dash cam as well.

More permanent options. Camera like this.

Tied into your head unit or a seperate screen like this.

Good luck.

My dump outlet is just in front of the leading edge of my slide-out, so I use the slide as a marker for aligning at the dump station. At one Michigan State Park where I host, the electrical pedestal is at the rear corner of the pad, but the water & sewer are about 10' from the front of the site. I have to use 2 lengths of water hose and 50' of sewer hose to reach them!

My waste valve is behind my rear wheels. I rarely line it up where I want it the first time. It's not a big deal, just looking for any suggestions. Thanks for the camera info.

How do you have wifi on the move when parking or accessing a dump station?

Mine is also right behind the rear wheels. I use the back wheel, put it just past the dump drain. If I'm off a little even with my short hose I'm still close enough.

That is not what I use the camera for. I was offering it up as a solution but I believe a phone used as a hot spot or something like a Verizon MIFI hotspot should work.

Dump Station Hose

The hoses now are adjustable length. I get as close as I can estimating and just extend the hose to the correct length to get me there with the remainder of the hose collapsed.

Lately I've actually tried to be a little further away. My outlet seems to always be below the level of the curb around the dump station and the extra length makes it easier to drain.
