testing out the furnace

We just bought a 2106 Jayco redhawk, and on one of our testing trips before going cross country, I turned on the furnace. There was a smell and the smoke detector went off. I turned it off immediately and haven't tried it again. Is it because it is new and needed to burn something off the first time?

Depends on what it smelled like. If it filled the motorhome with smoke, I'd be concerned. If it was merely a faint smell like a little oil or coating burning off, I wouldn't worry too much and run it a bit with the windows open. Just keep an eye on it if you do it yourself. It is always possible that someone left flammable materials in the assembly against something hot, and they are melting or catching fire.

We do the burning off process on every motorhome that is new. You will get a smokey smell at first. Likely an alarm. We run ours for 30 minutes with the doors and windows open al that clears up the problem. Use good judgement as the post before mentioned.

New heaters always have a light coating of machine oil on them from the manufacturer to keep them from rusting. It will burn off the first few times using the furnace. Just open a few windows and let it cycle through a few times. It should clear up after a bit.
