Tire Carrier

Has anyone found a chassie mounted spare tire carrier for the Jayco 29mv? It seems that there is room for one along the frame at the rear. I have the spare tire but it takes up one whole compartment. Thanks, Joe

Sorry not a chassis mounted carrier. I previously installed a front hitch receiver myself on our Greyhawk, and now carry a spare in the front. The job was fairly easy, and it has served its purpose well. No cooling issues in the heat. Adds some weight to the front axle, but I had some weight to give.

We got this (got the dealer to throw it in for free)...

Roadmaster Inc. - Tow Bars, Braking Systems & RV Accessories

It works great, and still allows you to tow.

Thanks for info. I went ahead and ordered the Roadmaster from Amazon. It is expensive but I need the compartment for camping stuff. Don't know why Jayco won't put on a spare tire, others do.

A spare tire fits nicely on the 31FS.

Here's what I did:

It's funny, there are two stories that we've been told about why no spare tires (it's not just Jayco, many manufacturers are doing away with them). One story was that spare tires are going away as rv owners have been injured trying to change tires themselves (attorneys calling the shots again).

The other story was that by not suppling a spare wheel and tire, there is a weight savings of at least 100 pounds per unit.

Take yer pick... I know what you're thinking... It's all about money. Could be...

Yes, it's all about money. Another story is that the manufacturers include a "free" roadside assistance program for one or two years which covers flat tires. When you renew, manufacturers get a kickback AND they save money up front by not including the spare, jack and wrench.

I personally don't want to worry about a trip-wrecker flat in some area where I have no cell phone reception to call my "free" roadside assistance, or am so remote I have to wait hours for help.

Another issue is the tire that will be provided. If it's a rear, and the manufacturer isn't the same (probably not a Michelin), the height can be different even though it's the same "size". This puts more strain on the tire that is lower in height. I've heard of people getting another flat almost immediately after getting a replacement tire from roadside assistance.

Face value: $.02

I've had the Roadmaster on my list for awhile and recently found one on ebay for just over 1/2 price of Amazon's price so I jumped on it. Now to get the tire and wheel to go on it...

@jgerhard, I am with you. In planning for my Alaska trip I was about to pull the trigger on tire warranty plan, but then considered that much of the trip would be in unserviceable areas, so planning for self sufficiency was the better choice. I had the tire mounted on a hitch mount. Where did you source the winch from and what was the material you ran between the frame rails? How did you fasten them to the frame rails?

Thanks

Ordered the roadmaster tire carrier on Wednesday from Amazon and received it on Friday. It went together with no problem. I tried to post a photo but so far haven't gotten that technical. It seem to be very solid. I had a left over tire cover from my Jeep Wrangler, fit great.

Hi CarlB,

The winch is a universal spare tire winch I got from Amazon. I can find the model number if you're interested. I used (4) 1"x2" steel tubing pieces across the top of the frame with shims to achieve the right clearances. I used 3/16" bolts, one on each end of the (4) pieces.

Hope this helps!

Unable to mount my spare tire between frame member on my Redhawk 26 XD as Jgerhard did, due to space constraints, and the Roadmaster Tire Carrier costing upwards of $1000.00 Canadian, I decided to build my own.
There is definitely a little overkill with my design but then again , better safe than sorry.
The units arms slide over the bumper and are secured to the frame rails with ½ inch grade 5 readyrod U brackets
All weight is on the frame, there is no weight on the bumper.
Check out pictures.

Great job, you should market it. I was able to get the Roadmaster for $500.. and it works great but if I had the ability I like your idea better. As a side note, how do you get the pictures on the post? Joe

The tire carrier isn't light, and I know the wheel/tire isn't light either. That much weight hanging off the tail, are any of you seeing issues w/ your front end lightening up?

When I installed the tire carrier in the hitch I made note of the height of the bumper before and after because someone else had mentioned the weight shift problem. The change was negligible. Maybe over time as the springs wear there will be a change but for now it looks good. Thanks for all the thoughts..

I was also concerned about the extra weight that far back. I really can't tell any difference in weight distribution or handling. The hitch, tire, and rim come in right at #100.
