Tow a Honda Odyssey with Melbourne 29D

Hi Gang!

Well I have officially rented out my rig 4 times now with great results and have had a good time getting to know how to fix things thanks to all of you! Before our big trip up to Yellowstone this summer I wanted to see if it makes sense for me to pull our 2008 Honda Odyssey Mini Van. I need the seating for when we are wanting to go out and about.. I only own a honda civic otherwise.

I have a screen shot of a calculator I used and I have verified all of my weight ratings... looks like I'm about 600 lbs under my GCWR. Please review the screen shot and tell me if I'm crazy thinking I can flat tow the Odyssey.
  • GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): 14050
  • GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating): 19050
  • Curb Weight (Empty Weight): 12525
  • Towing Capacity: 5000
  • GCC (Gross Carrying Capacity): 1523
  • CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity): ~1160 (GCC - Water - Propane)

I added in Fresh water, gear and supplies, fuel, driver and passengers in the screen shot.

Total GCW w/ Trailer (Gross Combined Weight): 18446
So this would be less than my 19,050 GCWR so I should be good right?

Thanks!

How much does the Odyssey weigh? Don't forget to add for your tow bar and equipment.

I'm no expert on the Melbourne but seems doable.

I'm just wondering how well it will tow? Will you be going to the mountains? All depends I guess.

Remember with a tow bar and flat towing your not adding much to your CCC. There is no measurable tongue weight except the tow bar. It's how much can you safely pull behind you that matters.

The odyssey weighs in at 4500 lbs curb weight and I had that in the calculator if you see the field for trailer weight. I'm sure there will be plenty of mountains on our trip, but I'm not sure if I want to purchase another vehicle for the trip that seats at least 6 unless it is significantly under 4500 lbs.
