Towing limitations

Our 2015 Greyhawk 29MV hitch has a tow limit of 5000 lbs. We love our RV and are going full-time soon, but we are hard-pressed to find vehicles that are satisfactory that meet this limitation. Does anyone have a suggestion of how we can increase the tow capacity short of a newer RV?

Thanks,
Norm

If the GCWR - GVWR supports it (greater than 5 K) change the hitch.

What do you want to tow?

Welcome to the Forum Norm.

The tow limits are set by the manufacturer of the vehicle and the hitch. The vehicles towing capacity is based on your engine, transmission, frame, gearing. The hitch limits are by that specific manufacturer. You can potentially change the hitch, RV or your towed vehicle. There are plenty of options for cars that can be towed behind your RV that are within the 5K towing limits. You just need to decide if you want a bigger RV that can tow your current car or a smaller car that can be towed behind your current RV... If your RV has the larger towing capacity than the current hitch then the hitch is the main issue. Good luck!

What size vehicle you looking to tow. Anything from a mid sized SUV or pickup, and smaller, should easily fit inside that weight restriction.

It may be a case where the towed vehicle needs to be trailered.

Doesn't change the weight limit. 5,000 lbs is 5,000 lbs, add the trailer and he needs to find even a lower weight toad...

Which is why it would really help to know what vehicle(s) he wants to tow.

Have your wife follow you in the car while you drive the RV ! No hitch needed and makes for a quiet drive . ;-)

No Danno is sleeping in the toad. His wife is in the RV.

I looked up the 2015 and it is 5K which is strange since mine (2018) is 7K. The vehicle, engine and other info seems to be the same so I wonder about the hitch itself?

Could be the chassis and the way the frame was stretched.

Could also be the hitch.

Definitely want to check the weights on the vehicle itself. Like was mentioned before, GCWR less GVWR will give you your max "tow rating" per the chassis.

From what I understand on some years with some manufacturers, the weight tag would support a higher tow rating, but they put 5,000 lb hitches on them, which limits that rating. The whole rating must be determined on the weakest part of the system. So if the weight tag supports 20,000 lbs of "tow capacity", but they slap a 5,000 lb hitch on, the rating can only be 5,000 lbs. Don't know if Jayco was part of that, but I think other manufacturers did some of that.

I had a SunSeeker Class C a few years ago that was on a E450 chassis. During the middle of the production year the towing capacity of the model was increased from 5K to 7,000 lbs. The reason, the hitch manufacturer that Forest River was using quit making 5 K hitches and started suppling 7.5K hitches. The chassis specs allowed it so a change of the hitch would allow greater towing. That did however present a problem for some E350 and F53 based rigs where the hitch could actually support more than the GCWR - GVWR would allow.

As a note, I never changed from the 5 to 7.5K hitch because I didn't need over 5 K of towing capacity. My dinghy then was a Ford Fusion on a tow dolly.

Hmmm, my rig is rated at 7,500, but I haven't actually checked to see which hitch they put on it. I wonder if it's based on the stretch of the chassis, or just which hitches they had laying around?

If you do a search the 2015 was rated at 7,300 and since there is no hitch in between 5,000 and 7,500 that is probably why it has the 5,000 rating.

. E-350 and E-450 are equipped with the 5-speed TorqShift® automatic overdrive transmission with Tow/Haul Mode and standard auxiliary external cooler. – E-350 Cutaway: 7,376 lbs. * Under normal driving conditions with routine fluid and filter changes.

The 2019 is listed at 10,000 lbs.

If you don’t mind used, check out a 2008-2012 Jeep Liberty. They weigh in at around 4000 lbs and provide the convenience of a comfortable SUV while providing 4 WD when exploring once you reach your destination.

5000 lb limit

Yeah, we have the 32’ Jayco and only have 5k also. That’s why you see so many Jeep wranglers as the tow vehicles. At around 4200 lbs. it tows fine. Our greyhawk only has enough power up hills to barely tow 4200 lbs. can’t imagine trying to tow a heavier vehicle. Good luck,!
