We're going to texas

We're heading to Texas in a couple of weeks. Our specifics are Fredericksburg and the hill country, San Antonio and Midland (to visit friends). We've been to various big cities in Texas (Austin, Dallas, Houston), but we've never "explored" the state. The catch is that we don't like big cities. We'd like to go to some pretty but remote areas, too. Are there any suggestions? We'll be heading east, ultimately ending in NC, but we'll have about a month for Texas. Thanks for any suggestions.

Be aware it will be hot - very hot. It isn't unusual to have temps at or near 100 through the month of September.

Be sure you make park reservations well in advance for Midland. The "awl bidness" is still booming in that part of the world and most parks are near capacity.

Hard to get more remote than in and around Big Bend National Park.

There are some really nice campgrounds in Kerrville near Fredericksburg. Palo Duro is great a mini grand canyon!

Lost Alaskan rv park in Alpine, or Ft. Davis mountains state park. Both are nice and a day trip to Big Bend.
Brownwood area is nice.

Ditto on reservations at Midland. It was booked last time I was there.

I live just outside San Antonio. The river walk is just a bunch of restaurants and bars. If that is your thing...then that is for you. I think it is only nice to see when lit up for Christmas. The Alamo is very small and only a part of the mission and part of a wall is left....overrated.

If you like wine and wine tasting, the Hill Country area is loaded with many good winery's and vineyards.

Just my opinion

Thanks for all the replies. We love the heat - bring it on. It's already going down in the 40s at night where we live...in our estimation way too early for summer to end. We're going to be gone 2 months and have only made a reservation in Boone, North Carolina in October. It's going to be hard to force ourselves to make reservations; because when we go on road trips, we like to be free to go wherever we want without pre-planning. We usually only call a day ahead. We'll definitely try some of your suggestions.

If coming through the Texas Panhandle definitely suggest Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Around the Midland area is Monahans Sandhhills State Park. As you make your way south, Brady, TX is the geographic center of the State and near there but further south in the hill country there are many wineries. The San Antonio river walk and the market are a must. While at the market in San Antonio plan on dining at Mi Tierra (tex-mex food with pan dulce, and Mexican candies) State parks about an hour southwest of San Antonio are Lost Maples State Park and Garner State Park. Reservations can be hard to come by so book early. If you make your way through East Texas I would suggest camping at Daingerfield State Park and stopping in Jefferson, Texas near there. Welcome to Texas!

Gruene is a pretty neat place (Gristmill & Gruene Hall) and there are a few back roads to get there but yes close to I-35. If you have the time, Big Bend is also up there for the places to visit while RV'ing in Texas. You won't get much more isolated if that is the goal and plenty of dirt roads to fully enjoy your jeep. We were there last week for the father in laws B-day and the crowds were minimal. With school about to start should be even less populated. With the outside temp at 95F Was able to get down to about 80F with the dark color scheme.

Texas visit...

Koko:

--Texas Hill Country is a great place to visit. We have ridden our Harleys there. Among the best riding anywhere.
--Great WWII museum in Fredericksburg. Focuses on the war in the Pacific.
--Our headquarters in the Hill Country has been Leakey. It seems to have cool reputation. Do not know if there is an RV park.
--Bandera, somewhere in that area, is worth a half-day trip.
--Great state park near Leakey: Garner State Park. Spacious, trees, very popular. Have not stayed there but it is enticing.

(Thanks for the info about the Melbourne and towing the Jeep!!!.)
(We live in Albuquerque. If New Mexico ever beckons, we can point you to cool places..............)

Bbq...

Koko: In Terlingua, which is in the Bid Bend area, we enjoyed wonderful BBQ in an old building that once was an opera house or theater of some sort.
Also in Terlingua: a cool old cemetery.

--We tried to book a campsite at Palo Duro Canyon and was told it was booked solid. I had called there maybe four weeks out. Was told that it's necessary to call 4-5 months out!

Admiral Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg..National Museum of the Pacific War

It's great! And check out the Heritage Museum...Home

Ton's of wineries around Fredericksburg.

Check out LBJ ranch...https://www.nps.gov/lyjo/planyourvis...itlbjranch.htm

If you can get into Palo Duro Canyon SP, it's DEFINITELY worth it!
