What is sealant around gas line ?

Hi,

Today I had to take the water heater out of the Entegra Odyssey 30Z and the gas line had a black rubber type sealant that was not easy to get off. Does anyone know what this sealant is and where to buy some? It is not foam. Thanks

I'm guessing you're talking about where the gas line goes through a penetration, and not a gas line connection. More than likely it's a polyurethane sealant that you can get at a hardware or big box store. A gas line supply connection wouldn't use anything like you describe. That would be a white colored gas line brush on compound, or yellow Teflon tape.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's where the gas line enters the water heater on the side. This sealant is black and I would describe it as "ruggery" feeling. You can't get it off with your fingers, you have to cut it and peel it away. I can tell it was squeezed from a tube.
