What is this and or what does it do

I saw some water leaking from above of my 17 Seneca's wet compartment and saw this. I'm not sure what it is or what it does. I need some help identifying the gadget.
Thanks in advance,

It can usually be removed by hand, cleaned, and you may want to apply some petroleum jelly to the o-ring and recheck for leaks.

I recommend periodic maintenance and cleaning.

X2 what the others said. I remove mine every fall when I winterize and clean the screen.

Every question is a good one. And yes it is.

Thanks, Guys. I was wondering where that water pump was. Can someone tell me the best way to access it?

As others have answered... yes, the two red wires are actually connected at the bottom - to the pump pressure switch that is attached to the pump. The switch is wired in series with the pump and these switches have a tendency to go out after a while without much warning. I have learned to carry a couple of spares, as they ALWAYS fail when we are out boondocking more than 200 miles away from any RV parts supply locations.

The term easy is not in the Jayco vocabulary. You literally have to lay on your back and slide up there. I took a piece of plywood and propped it up on a saw horse at one end and the other end resting in the wet bay. I can then sit on it and roll onto my back. Lots of fun.

Since O-rings are rubber don't you think silicone should be used instead of petroleum jelly?

Rvermont, you are dead on...Jayco makes everything difficult.
I was afraid that would be the answer.

They make silicone Plummers grease for o rings. Can be found at any big box stores.

Hi all! Just cleaned my strainer. I have a 2017 Redhawk 26X1 and the pump is under the fridge. Your comments about Jayco are justified. I couldn't get the strainer off because of the position of the pipes and pump. I decided to move the pump a bit, bit then I found they had mounted the pump from the outside and the mounting screws were next to impossible to remove because of clearance to the hot water heater. An hour and a half later, pump moved, strainer cleaned, and now the pump can easily removed if I have to.
All fun and games!

You can also use "Keg lube". Similar to the plumbers grease, but food grade. If you drink the water, I would use keg lube. It's available at Amazon for sure. I couldn't find it at a rural hardware store when I needed some out on the road, so I just used plumbers grease. I was using it for the toilet seal anyway (Edit: Just remembered, it wasn't the toilet seal, it was the shower drain...), so no big deal, but it'd be nice to have just one product to use wherever.

FWIW, I've used petroleum jelly before too in a pinch. Just be ready to replace those O-rings if you do that. I never had to, but I was aware of the risk and prepared with a contingency in the event of failure. It is well known that petroleum products and rubber do not get along well.

If this is a concern, O-rings are commonly available made with many different materials.

Having replaced our water pump, 3 times. I've moved it to a more accessible location.
If its easy to get to, its about a 5 minute job. 2 screw-on hand tight fittings and 2 wire nuts. I use large plastic wire ties to secure the whole pump assembly to the sewer drain pipe. No new fittings were purchased, just rotated the whole water pump assembly down from the strange 90 degree right angles that hold it up behind the control panel in the utility bay.

So much of what Jayco does is for aesthetics. Hide it and make it look pretty. Form follows function should always be rule number 1
