Atwood heater plug

I lost the drain plug on my Starcraft Launch. For the first 5 years I taped it to the inside of the heater door for easy retrieval but didn’t last year so I ordered a 12 pack of 1/2” plugs. The plugs (about 0.9” long) fit fine but only go in 1/4 to 1/2” before stopping. I totally ruined the head on the first one.
I feel good that they are holding the water but uncertain if this is normal or if anyone has experienced this. I read that the old Atwood plug had a 7/8” head but this one is 15/16” - the same socket size I recall using on my original plug.

It looks like I have a worn donut-like gasket that encircles the plug hole. Is there anything I should know about replacing it?

Thanks

There's nothing special about the plugs you have. The threads are what's called "pipe thread", which is tapered. It will tighten up enough to seal, and still have threads showing. Perfectly normal. I have extras, and the wrench size varies between manufacturers.

JFlightRisk,
Thanks so for your reply; I had no idea about tapering.

6 Pt socket

Yes. My 15/16” 6 pt socket is a bit loose on the plug. After your comment I think it would be worthwhile to do some measurements. Thanks

After multiple of these things stripping or leaking on me, I eliminated the plug with a fitting, hose and ball valve.

We have had both brands of water heater and they both have tapered threads. I wrap mine with a couple of wraps of Teflon tape and tighten it up. It does not need to be cinched up any tighter than it takes to not leak.

If it drips just give it a little turn till it stops.

My suburban has a threaded anode rod and I hardly have to ever even replace the tape when I drain it.
