Destination Picabo

We were zipping along when I spotted a small sign and some campers from the roadway in Picabo for Silver Creek RV park. I flipped a turn finding an amazing 15 or so spots just beyond the berm. This turned out to be a great find! Electric and Water to all the spots and a fire pit tucked into the berm. Just a short walk away was a fully equipped bathroom with an amazing shower.

That little town was fantastic

Oops... 7/31

Stashed the camper in Picabo whilst we took a day trip over to Boise and then the next day headed south to Salt Lake, UT.

Spotted some campgrounds as we rolled by Willard Bay State Park and made the turn off at the south end. The north part looked awesome as 60mph, and we pulled into a site that had full hook ups appeared to be great. It was a weird place. All the camp spots you were supposed to back into, but the campground was empty. It was a huge parking lot with full hookups and seemed odd that the hole campground seemed like a parking lot. The bathrooms were dirty... I mean.. DIRTY. The scenery was great, but every site was on top of a dump station (notice the manhole cover under the front wheel).

Sounds like you ended up at the South Marina campground which you accurately described. If you go that way again stay at the North Marina campground. We stayed there a couple of nights on the way to and from Kanab, UT last year and found it to be quite nice.....

South Marina - That was it! I suspect I was lured into it by the 60mph view of North Marina... It looked so nice.

Thanks you so much! I still have a couple more updates before we dropped the camper off for some warranty issues.

Ventured out of the house with the goal of Red Feathers Lake. Whoa… so crowded, spotted a couple of sites on the ridge but just was not feeling it. Zipped over the mountain and dropped into Rustic. Headed down towards Mountain Park with hopes there was a bit more availability. There is so much BLM stuff I knew we would find something, I was just being picky.

As you head east from Rustic you come down the mountainside and notice this cute campground across the river. We turned off and across a single lane bridge and head into Mountain Park. Lots of families and a neat park for the boys to run around. Cruised around, dropped some blocks to set up for the night. Mountain Park was a neat campground, but it seemed as if we were all on top of each other. We ended up with an electric site which worked out swimmingly.

Great camping pics! We also have twin boys, but they are now 14, along with two other boys.

Great thread!

Thank you for sharing your adventures; it was a very fun and informative read. Especially loved the pics with your little ones. We have a one year old son whom we are going to take camping for the first time this year, and all of your shared experiences and advice was very helpful. (We are currently looking for the right camper to purchase, and the bunkhouse models seem like the easiest with a very active toddler.)
Cheers!

Thank you so much!

One of the reasons we chose the bunkhouse model. We are planning on moving to Idaho this summer so hopefully we can get out for a few adventures over the summer while we relocate.

Geneva Park Campground
Not even a couple days later we get out again! Yay us! This time we wanted to get away from people a bit. Guanella Pass might have some leaf change but it was pretty warm down in the Denver area. I counted 6 campgrounds on BLM land before we headed out with the goal of just rolling the dice with no reservations.

As the Jeep pulls our Maxx up the pass, we hear a huge clunk as we round one of those 15mph switchbacks. A quick look in the mirror appears nothing is amiss. Then a mile later turn into Burning Bear Campground. A loop around and the Camp Host comes out to meet us.

He quickly notices that I am dragging my propane bottle…. PROPANE BOTTLE!!!! Looks like the both bolts in the base had come out explaining the clunking sound we heard heading around that turn. The bottle was hanging from the propane line that was now ripped off the front of the TT. Disconnected the bottle and stashed it in the camper. Looks like I am going to have to come up with a better system for the propane system. Wasn’t much damage to it, just darn scary.

Camp host recommended we head up a bit further to Geneva Campground (wonder if it was the screaming kids or the dangling propane bottle). Dry camped it, darn wonderful! Just a few other campers and a whole bunch of cows.

Jackson Lake

Went out with a bunch of friends to Jackson Lake. Had high hopes of swimming and beverages by the fire. Alas… A storm rolled in with 50+mph wind gusts and sustained winds of 40mph plus the late into the night. Got the swimming done before the storm rolled in. Then had beverages tucked up behind the vehicles after dining in sunset. Brutal night with the winds, some of them spent the night in our camper instead of one of the tents with broken supports.

Golden Gate State park
We have been wanting to hit this site up for a while and finally had an opportunity. Not far from Denver and away from I-70. Scored a great spot just dropping in nicely tucked into the trees. Beautiful site!

Cheyenne Mountain State Park

Turned out to be our last for the season. Probably could have gone out a few more times, but we had some plans to scope out Montana and Idaho for a possible 2017 move. We had a hell of a view down onto Colorado Springs and took the boys up to Santas Workshop the following day.

Winter stuff

Installed some MaxAire vent covers over the winter along with getting some warranty work done to the camper.

Swapped out the Jeep Grand for an F150. That Jeep did some amazing stuff for us, 160k and pulled the Eisenhower with the Maxx averaging the 60mph up to the top. The new to me F-150 has 3.5 Ecoboost with a 4” fabtech lift. Installed Firestone Airbags and Airlift Remote Leveling System.

Boyd Lake State Park

Hitched up the F-150 and hauled ourselves up to Boyd Lake to set up the camper for our year. Typical for us, a snow storm rolls in. Even with the wind, rain and snow it was still a good time!
